Everyone understands a cancellation policy — until they need to be the exception.

We accept it with hotels, flights and concert tickets. If plans change too late, we know there can be a financial consequence.

But when the appointment is with your hairdresser, somehow it feels different. You know me. You sit in my chair. We talk, we laugh, we share stories. There is a personal relationship.

And of course I understand that life happens. Children get sick. Emergencies happen. Plans sometimes have to change. I have been there too.

But understanding what happened doesn’t give me those hours back.

A hotel cannot sell last night’s empty room tonight. An airline cannot sell yesterday’s empty seat tomorrow. And I cannot sell yesterday’s four-hour appointment today.

I prepared for you. I reserved that time especially for you, and I may have said no to somebody else because your appointment was already in my book.

Maybe that’s why cancellation policies can feel uncomfortable in such a personal business. But empathy and responsibility are two different things.

I can genuinely care about what happened to you without being able to absorb the financial loss for it.

That’s not a lack of compassion. It’s the reality of running a small, personal business.

It takes two to tango.

It’s something we all know, but recently I’ve been thinking about it a lot.

Some connections last for years — friendships, relationships, professional partnerships. We collect memories, share chapters of our lives, and somewhere along the way, I think I started to believe that history itself would keep a connection alive.

But history itself is not participation.

Two people can have shared a thousand moments and still arrive at a place where only one of them is trying to keep the rhythm.

And that’s perhaps one of the hardest things to recognize.

Not every change comes with an argument. Not every distance has a dramatic reason. Sometimes you simply feel that something has shifted.

The rhythm is different.

You can spend a long time wondering whether you should try harder, give more, understand more, or recreate something that once came naturally.

But the tango was never meant to be danced alone.

Whether it’s love, friendship, a professional partnership, or the relationship built over years between a client and the person they trust — there has to be movement from both sides.

A shared past can start the music.

It takes two people to keep dancing.

There is something I’ve noticed more and more in the service industry.

We go the extra mile to provide a personal, high-quality service. We prepare, plan ahead, reserve hours for one person, answer questions, follow up and sometimes even make exceptions because we want to be human.

And yet, people disappear.

They ask for availability, choose a date, discuss the service — and the deposit never arrives.

Others confirm, cancel at the last minute and disappear when the cancellation fee applies.

Messages go unanswered. Follow-ups too. And sometimes, you actually get blocked.

Literally on your phone — and in your business.

This is exactly why deposits and cancellation policies have become necessary. Not because service providers want more rules, but because our time, preparation and income need protection too.

Especially when you work one-on-one, several hours may be reserved entirely for one client. That is part of providing the level of service I believe in.

And it doesn’t only happen with new clients.

You stay in touch with people you have worked with for years. You send your dates, plan ahead, reach out, sometimes even travel — and still, sometimes, there is silence.

Of course, nobody owes me an appointment. People change their minds, find someone else, or simply move on. I understand that.

What I find difficult is not the “no.”

It is getting no answer at all.

“No thank you, Walter” or “I found someone else” may not be the answer I hoped for, but at least I know where I stand.

I don’t need everyone to book with me.

But if I give my time, attention and commitment to people, I believe basic communication should go both ways.

Because behind every appointment is not just a service.

There is a person running a business.

And sometimes, the most respectful thing you can give that person is simply an answer.

HOW MUCH LIGHT DOES A BRUNETTE REALLY NEED?

There’s a big difference between seeing highlights and seeing a natural-looking brunette.

For me, the goal is not that you look at the hair and immediately see exactly where every foil was placed.

The lighter pieces should connect with the darker ones. Some are finer, some are stronger. Some disappear into the hair, while others catch the light when the hair moves.

That’s what creates dimension and keeps the result looking natural.

And it’s also why a good brunette needs darkness. If everything becomes light, the whole result becomes flat — and at some point, it simply doesn’t look brunette anymore.

The idea is not to make a brunette blonde.

The idea is to make the brunette more interesting.

Soft. Dimensional. Natural.

And still brunette.
