At Restaurant Rosenhøj, Søuld Acoustic Fragments are applied across the walls as a modular acoustic surface, bringing together sound absorption, tactility and a distinct architectural expression.
Inspired by the logic of tiles, the design breaks the eelgrass surface into smaller components that can be rotated and shifted to create different patterns, depth and shadow. Sharp grooves meet softer rounded edges, creating subtle transitions between each element and allowing the natural fibres and texture of the eelgrass to become part of the visual composition.
The modular format gives architects and designers a high degree of freedom while maintaining a calm, cohesive surface. With Acoustic Class C performance and a design made for disassembly, Acoustic Fragments combine acoustic comfort with flexibility and material character.

For more than 400 years, eelgrass has been part of Danish building culture.
On the island of Læsø, naturally washed ashore eelgrass was gathered, dried and woven into distinctive thatched roofs — often built by local women using techniques adapted from weaving. Rich in natural mineral salts, the material proved remarkably durable, insulating and resistant to fire and decay, allowing some roofs to endure for centuries.
Today, Søuld builds on this material heritage, translating centuries of knowledge into acoustic materials for contemporary architecture.

Calm begins with the materials that surround us. In this summerhouse on the Danish island of Bornholm, simplicity, tactility and warmth define the architectural expression. Clean lines are balanced by soft, textured surfaces, creating an interior that feels both grounded and inviting.
Integrated into the living space, Søuld Acoustic Boards add depth and acoustic comfort while introducing the distinctive texture of eelgrass. Together with the surrounding wood, the panels create a balanced material palette where sound, light and tactility come together to shape a calm and comfortable living environment.

Eelgrass carries a remarkable set of natural qualities shaped by life in the sea.
Its porous fibre structure absorbs sound effectively, while naturally occurring mineral salts contribute to inherent fire resistance and durability. The material can also help regulate humidity, and its visible fibres, subtle colour variations and soft tactility bring warmth and character to interior spaces.
These qualities are part of what makes eelgrass so distinctive — a natural material with both sensory depth and strong technical potential for contemporary architecture.

At Villa Rue, material choices shaped the architecture from the very beginning. Developed with PAX architects, the private residence was conceived with a clear focus on restraint, quality and responsible materials. Søuld Acoustic Boards FR were selected early in the process as a natural fit — combining acoustic performance with a tactile, biobased material expression.
Cladding the ceiling throughout the main spaces, the eelgrass panels become an integrated architectural surface rather than an added acoustic treatment. Their texture and warm tones soften the restrained interior while supporting a calm, controlled soundscape.
A home where material responsibility, acoustic comfort and architectural clarity are considered as one.

Before becoming an acoustic material, eelgrass is gently collected after it naturally washes ashore along the Danish coastline and then spread across nearby fields to dry.
Sun and wind gradually remove the moisture while helping preserve the fibres, natural colour variations and tactile character of the plant. Once dry, the eelgrass is ready to be processed into Søuld Acoustic Panels.
A simple, low-intervention process that keeps the material closely connected to its coastal origin.

Beneath the surface, eelgrass forms extensive underwater meadows that play an important role in healthy coastal ecosystems. During growth, the sea plant binds carbon and provides habitat and shelter for a wide range of marine species, contributing to the ecological balance of shallow coastal waters.
At Søuld, our relationship with this ecosystem begins with responsible sourcing. We only collect eelgrass after it has naturally detached and washed ashore along the Danish coastline, leaving living eelgrass meadows undisturbed.
By giving the washed ashore material a new purpose in durable acoustic products, we extend the storage of the carbon captured during its growth. Independent biodiversity analysis confirms that our collection practices do not negatively affect the ecological integrity of the examined coastal areas, including the seabed, eelgrass distribution, birdlife and other species.
