There were roughly 2.5 billion T. rexes on Earth, but not all at the same time
Humans have been marveling at the size of T. rexes ever since first putting a full skeleton together. Now, thanks to research published in April 2021, scientists have a better idea of exactly how many of them once called Earth their (temporary) home. According to the team at the University of California, Berkeley, approximately 2.5 billion of these dinosaurs existed across more than 127,000 generations. They reached this estimate by taking into account the dinosaur’s body size, sexual maturity, and energy needs. By the way, this is what T. rexes actually sounded like. (Spoiler alert: It’s not like in the movies!)

Oh na, na – what’s my name?

I’m just enjoying another sol exploring Mars and doing some science. From orbit, my team has seen unusually dark bedrock nearby, so I’m investigating one of the rocks' composition and texture to see what exactly is making it appear so different.

It’s spring here in the southern hemisphere of Mars – and with it comes dust season. 🌪️

I'm on the lookout for dust devils that might pop up around me, and this downhill view gives my team a chance to see if there’s any dusty gusts through the canyons I’ve driven through.

At the center of the nebula NGC 2346 is a pair of stars that are so close together that they orbit around each other every 16 days!

This shows the "last gasp" of this binary star system as it dies.

Located about 2,000 light-years away, NGC 2346 resides in the constellation Monoceros.
