There was a time when Cyprus was the undisputed economic powerhouse of the Mediterranean. Cypriot merchant ships carried not only metals, but also a precious culinary treasure: the Cypriot carob.

The ancient Greeks saw the markets of Egypt overflowing with carobs and believed the fruit to be the “Egyptian fig”. Theophrastus (4th century BC), however, was quick to set the record straight in his landmark work, Enquiry into Plants. He explained that the name was incorrect, as domestic carob production in ancient Egypt was extremely limited.

Within this thriving commercial landscape, Cyprus emerged as the leading force in the Egyptian market. Renowned for its exceptional quality, the Cypriot carob was transported in large quantities through the ports of ancient Cyprus to Egypt, where it was highly sought after. Cypriot merchant ships supplied the Egyptian markets while also carrying these valuable carob pods throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Cypriot carob became a highly prized culinary treasure, dominated exports and rightfully earned its place among the products most sought after in the Mediterranean. 🇨🇾

Cypriot Carob: A Timeless Treasure with a 7,000-Year Story 🌳🇨🇾

Around 7,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period, Cyprus’s earliest inhabitants discovered the nutritional value of wild carob and made it part of their daily diet.

Around 4,000 years ago, the ancient Cypriots began planting and cultivating carob trees in a more organised way and on a wider scale.

Since then, the carob tree has taken deep root in the Cypriot landscape, becoming an inseparable part of the island’s history, traditions and food culture.

Today, carob is celebrated around the world for its remarkable nutritional value. With its exceptional quality, rich flavour and centuries-old heritage, Cypriot carob remains a true treasure of the island, nourishing and strengthening generation after generation.

✨ A Taste of Cyprus – Carob King Black Gold!

We are delighted to have received a wonderful €100 selection of organic products from Carob King Black Gold in Paphos, as a prize in the Paphos Zingers’ Grand Christmas Raffle 2026! 🎄🎶

Known as the “Black Gold of Cyprus”, carob has been part of the island’s heritage for centuries. Carob King celebrates this wonderful Cypriot tradition by creating delicious, natural products from local, organically grown carob. 🌿🇨🇾

You can find the Carob King shop at Ibrahim’s Khan in Paphos old town. Christina would love to tell you about the history and uses of carob and invite you to sample different products, from delicious carob syrup and traditional treats (made by her husband Thymios) to other organic goodies, such as beauty products and herbs, herbal teas and remedies.
