Self care as a way of life 🫶
Today we're breaking down Topic #1: "Calorie counting is a lie of the fitness industry. Calorie content is measured in a bomb calorimeter. The body is not a furnace." Truth or myth?

A myth taken to the extreme — but with a grain of truth.

Yes, the calorie content of food was historically determined by the energy released when it was burned in a calorimetric bomb. However, modern dietetics uses digestibility correction factors (the Atwater system): proteins and carbohydrates provide ~4 kcal/g, fats ~9 kcal/g, and fiber about 2 kcal/g, because the body doesn't fully absorb it.

Yes, the human body is not a furnace. We don't burn food — we metabolize it through enzymatic reactions.

But this does NOT mean that calories don't matter.

No one has repealed the laws of thermodynamics. If the body consistently receives less energy than it expends, it is forced to tap into internal reserves (fat, glycogen, and to a lesser extent, muscle tissue).

Modern science views obesity as the result of a complex interaction of:

· energy balance;
· hormonal status (insulin, leptin, ghrelin, cortisol);
· appetite and eating behavior;
· genetic predisposition;
· gut microbiome composition;
· sleep quality and duration;
· chronic stress levels;
· physical activity.

Therefore, the claim that "calorie counting is a lie of the fitness industry" does not align with the scientific consensus. Calorie counting is a tool — but not the only one, and not always mandatory.

Why Are We Still Arguing About Calories?

Every other blogger on the internet claims to know the "truth" about weight loss. Some shout that you just need to shut your mouth and count every single crumb you eat. Others insist that calorie counting is a relic of the past, that the real enemy is insulin, and that all you have to do is cut carbs — then fat will melt away on its own, even if you're eating butter with a spoon.

Both extremes are oversimplifications. They sell well, but they don't work well in real life.

Why does this happen? Because the human body is more complex than a calculator — yet it doesn't break the laws of physics. That sounds like a contradiction, but in fact, it's the key to understanding everything.

Over years of research, science has accumulated enough data to answer most of the "sacred" questions of dietetics. However, these answers rarely go viral, because they don't fit into a single post and they don't promise a magic pill.

In the next articles, we'll break down 6 of the most popular claims about calories, insulin, and fat burning.

We'll test each one for scientific validity, separate facts from manipulation, and show where both sides of the argument are right — and where they're wrong.

The brain thinks it’s entertainment, while the body gets stronger
Sometimes just a few minutes of movement can give the body more than a full workout.
Dancing with light weights on your arms or legs is not just a beautiful movement — it’s a smart way to activate the body without inner resistance.
Why does it work 👇
The brain often perceives the word “workout” as effort, obligation, and strain. But dance is processed very differently — as rhythm, pleasure, and freedom of movement.
That means less resistance and more engagement.
What these short practices give you:
— muscles work deeper and more actively coordination and body awareness improve— joints and ligaments get stronger through gentle load— bones receive a healthy stimulus from movement and added weight circulation improves and energy rises mood lifts and stress decreases
Even 3–5 minutes of this kind of dance can wake up the body better than long attempts to convince yourself to exercise.
The best path to fitness is not through forcing yourself, but through enjoying movement.
Don’t forget to add these short strength-dance moments into your routine throughout the day. A few minutes here and there — and your body will thank you.
