One thing I keep seeing during buccal massage is people switching the same fingers between the inside and outside of the mouth.

First, you don’t want fingers that have touched massage oil going into the mouth.

But even more importantly, you should never take fingers covered in saliva and start massaging the skin with them.

You’re transferring saliva and oral bacteria directly onto the face, which can irritate the skin and potentially contribute to breakouts or other skin reactions.

My thumbs stay inside the mouth, while my other fingers stay on the outside.

There are some areas where it’s easier to work with your index and middle fingers inside the mouth and your thumb on the outside. That’s completely fine — but you need to change your gloves before switching.

Never use the same gloves to go from inside the mouth back to working on the skin.

I often hear people say that wrinkles are caused only by collagen loss, elastin loss, or bone resorption—not muscle tension.

The truth is, facial aging is multifactorial. Some changes we can influence, and some we can’t.

On this page, I focus on the factors that can be improved with facial massage.

And here’s something worth thinking about:

If muscle tension had nothing to do with wrinkles, why does Botox work?

Botox doesn’t restore collagen, reverse bone resorption, or tighten the skin. It works by changing the activity of the muscles.

Muscles are not the only reason wrinkles develop—but they are an important piece of the puzzle.

If you want to understand facial anatomy, muscle tension patterns, and how to use that knowledge in your treatments, registration for FaceLogic Online Training is now open.
