My birth experience 🤍
I hope sharing my story helps someone feel a little calmer and less afraid.
I live in Toronto, Canada, and this was my first baby.
At 2:45 AM, my water broke and kept leaking. It was clear with a slightly beige tint. My contractions started almost immediately.
I was under the care of a midwife throughout my pregnancy, so I called the midwives’ emergency line three times and left voicemail messages. I was also Group B Strep positive, so I knew I’d likely need to go to the hospital sooner rather than later.
They called me back around 7:00 AM and told me another midwife would contact me at 10:00 AM.
While waiting, I tried to rest and even sleep a little to avoid making myself more anxious.
At 10:00 AM, my midwife called and told me to come to the hospital by 12:00 PM. My husband and I finished packing our hospital bag and headed there.
When we arrived, I was taken to triage, where they monitored the baby’s heartbeat and my contractions. Everything looked good.
Because I was Group B Strep positive and my water had already broken, they decided to induce labor instead of waiting.
At 2:00 PM, I received my first induction pill.
My contractions continued but were still irregular.
By 5:00 PM, I was 3 cm dilated.
Later, I was given a second induction pill. That’s when everything changed.
The contractions became incredibly intense. I listened to meditation tracks, wore an eye mask, and my husband did everything he could to help me stay calm and try different positions.
But honestly… the pain became unbearable for me.
I even started feeling guilty for not handling it better.
Eventually, my husband and I decided that getting an epidural was the right choice.
And honestly… it was one of the best decisions I made.
I received my epidural around 7:00 PM.
By 8:00 PM, I was already fully dilated (10 cm).
Around 9:10 PM, it was time to start pushing, and the whole birth team came in.
At 9:45 PM, our beautiful son, Kristian, was born. 🤍
Everything went smoothly, quickly, and exactly how I had hoped.
And you know what surprised me the most?
