Why would your physiotherapist have you train just one arm at a time?

Sometimes it’s easier to focus on good form when there’s less happening at once. And as Alice explains here, working one side at a time can also give your core an extra challenge as your body works to stay balanced.

Sometimes taking something away from an exercise changes the challenge completely.

We’ve all done it.

A warning pops up. We’re busy. We click “Remind Me Later” and keep going.

Our bodies can be a bit like that too.

A little stiffness. Poor sleep. Low energy. A headache that keeps coming back.

Not every little symptom means something is wrong. But when your body keeps sending you the same message, it might be worth paying attention.

UPDATE - OCTOBER 1: Our phone service has been fully restored and both locations can now be reached normally. Thank you for your patience!

An update for our Yellow Gazebo community:

Unfortunately, we've been experiencing significant phone service disruptions due to an issue with Bell's internet service.

While our phones are currently working at one of our two locations, the other location remains without phone service. This means you can still reach us, but you may experience longer hold times or need to leave a message.

Our team has spent hours trying to resolve this with Bell, only to be transferred repeatedly between departments. After waiting nearly 24 hours for a promised callback, we were told we'd been placed in the wrong queue.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time we've experienced serious service issues with Bell. We've dealt with recurring problems since our phone system was first installed in 2023.

Richard has shared his experience publicly, and we're sharing his post in the hope that Bell will take ownership of the situation and provide a lasting solution.

We're still open and here to help! If you can't reach us immediately, please leave a message and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. You can also book appointments online through our website.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience, particularly with our administrative team, who have been working tirelessly to keep things running while trying to get this resolved.

Thank you for your understanding.

Not every update needs a big reveal.

It’s been a few weeks since my last My Spine Project video. I’m still seeing Sarah, still doing my traction at home and still doing the mobility work she gave me.

And that’s really the point.

Working on something long-term often isn’t very exciting. It’s doing the work consistently, giving it time and eventually seeing whether it actually made a difference.

So for now, I keep doing my part, Sarah keeps doing hers, and eventually we’ll take another set of X-rays and see what’s changed.

This is the part you usually don’t get to see.

A lot of what happens at Yellow Gazebo has nothing to do with treatment.

It’s Hannah calling me over to look at something. A quick conversation at reception.

Checking in about what’s happening that day. Straightening a room before I leave.

And sometimes it’s just stopping for a minute to talk about one of our patients and the little conversations we’ve had with them over the years.

These aren’t necessarily the things people see when they come in for an appointment. But after 14 years, I’ve realized that a clinic isn’t really built from treatment rooms, equipment or even services.

It’s built in thousands of little moments between people.

Most of them aren’t particularly exciting.

But they’re a pretty big part of what makes Yellow Gazebo feel like Yellow Gazebo.

A small change in your setup can make a big difference in how a split squat feels.

Yang, one of our physiotherapists, shows his patient why he still wants some width between the feet, even though one foot is in front of the other.

From there, he’s looking at the hip, knee and toes, and making sure the knee isn’t collapsing inward as his patient moves through the exercise.

Sometimes better movement starts with a small adjustment.

Sometimes doing less is exactly what you need.

In Trellis, Winter represents the times when our energy is lower, life is heavier, or we simply don’t have as much to give.

Nature doesn’t expect constant growth. Neither should we.

Your goals might get smaller. Your workouts might get shorter. You might need more rest.

That doesn’t mean you’ve stopped moving forward.

You’re just in a different season.

And eventually, Spring returns.

Counselling doesn’t always look the same for everyone.

I asked Julia what it’s like working with both children and adults, and how her approach changes depending on who’s sitting in front of her.

With younger clients, that might mean more creativity, play and activities. With adults, there may be more space for reflection, relationships and past experiences.

But as Julia puts it, the foundation is pretty similar: people want to feel heard, understood and accepted.

Julia is part of our counselling team at Yellow Gazebo.

For years, there was a yellow bike outside Yellow Gazebo. But it wasn’t actually ours.

Back when we were at 804 St. Clair, someone left an old bike chained to the city bike post outside the clinic. It stayed there so long that it slowly became more and more worn down.

Then someone suggested I paint it yellow. So I did. And somehow, that forgotten old bike became part of Yellow Gazebo.

We put flowers in the basket. Pumpkins in the fall. It sat through more than a few Toronto winters. People regularly told us how much they liked it, and some even used the yellow bike as a landmark to find us.

Eventually, though, it was showing its age. We asked the city to remove it, and after a few years, one day it was finally gone.

Looking back, the timing feels strangely fitting.

In 2022, Yellow Gazebo expanded next door into 802. Then, only a year later, we left our longtime home at 804 and opened our new space at 840.

Those two years transformed the clinic. And somewhere around that chapter of change, our little yellow landmark disappeared too.

It’s funny how something that started as an abandoned bike can become part of the story of a place.

I still miss seeing it out there.

Ever feel like your shoulders are doing all the work?

In this exercise, Alice uses the ball to help her patient work on core stability, shoulder blade control and getting some of those other postural muscles involved, instead of relying so heavily on the upper traps.

And as her patient demonstrates, it can look very different when you first start.

Sometimes progress is simply teaching your body a better way to do the work.
