What I noticed this week: hypermobility.

I saw a few patients this week whose joints move a little more than average.

And something people don’t always realize about hypermobility is that being very flexible doesn’t necessarily mean your muscles are relaxed.

Sometimes it’s the opposite.

Your joints are supported partly by passive structures like ligaments and connective tissue, and partly by the muscles surrounding them. When a joint has more movement and less passive stability, those muscles may have to work harder to keep everything controlled.

That can sometimes show up as muscles that feel surprisingly tight or tense.

Your body may essentially be saying:

“If this joint needs more stability, I’m going to hold on here.”

So in a hypermobile person, simply stretching or repeatedly trying to loosen every tight muscle isn’t always the answer.

Often, what that joint needs is strength and control.

Strong muscles give a hypermobile joint more active support and help protect it during everyday movement. That’s why strengthening and stability work are such an important part of managing symptomatic hypermobility.

Sometimes the tight muscle isn’t the problem.

Sometimes it’s doing its best to protect the problem.

When I’m treating someone, tightness is only one part of what I’m paying attention to.

I’m also noticing:

How easily the tissue moves.

Whether your body is guarding or starting to relax.

How one side feels compared with the other.

Whether a muscle feels overworked, shortened or simply tired.

How your breathing changes as I work.

And whether the area responds better to pressure, movement, warmth or time.

Sometimes the place that feels the tightest isn’t the area that needs the most pressure.

Sometimes your body needs me to slow down.

Sometimes it needs movement.

Sometimes it needs work somewhere else entirely.

Massage isn’t just about finding tight muscles and pressing harder.

It’s about paying attention to how your body responds—and adjusting the treatment as I go.

Last night, Brookfield Massage joined The Beach BIA’s outdoor movie night at Kew Gardens Park.

Before The Fantastic Four began, I offered complimentary short massages and had the chance to meet so many people from the neighbourhood.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, said hello, picked up a business card or took a few minutes to relax before the movie.

Supporting local events like this is one of my favourite parts of being a small business in The Beaches.

People often assume I'm thinking things like...

"Wow, they're really tight."

Or...

"They must spend too much time at a desk."

The truth is, my thoughts are usually much more like this:

"That's interesting..."

"I wonder why this muscle is working so hard."

"What movement or habit could be creating this pattern?"

"How is everything connected?"

As I'm treating, I'm constantly building a picture in my mind.

I'm thinking about how your muscles attach, how your joints move, how one area might be affecting another, and what your body is trying to compensate for.

It's a bit like putting together a puzzle.

And one thing I'm never thinking is anything judgmental about your body.

I'm not judging your posture, your flexibility, your body shape, or how tight you are.

I'm simply curious.

Curious about how your body moves.

Curious about why it's adapted the way it has.

Curious about how I can help it move a little more comfortably.

That's one of the things I love most about being a massage therapist.

Every body tells a different story.

And every treatment starts with understanding that story.

Thoughtful, individualized massage therapy that treats the person—not just the pain.

"I haven't shaved."

"I'm so tight."

"Sorry I'm talking so much."

"Sorry I'm not talking."

"Sorry I fell asleep."

"Sorry it's been so long since my last massage."

I hear these all the time.

The truth is, none of those things matter.

I'm not judging how tight you are, how long it's been, whether you fall asleep, or whether you want to chat through the whole appointment.

My focus is on helping you feel better.

Massage doesn't have to look a certain way to be effective.

Some people talk the entire time.

Some people fall asleep within five minutes.

Some people ask lots of questions.

Some people just enjoy the quiet.

There's no "right" way to have a massage.

The best treatment is the one where you feel comfortable enough to let your body relax and be exactly as it is.

That's where the real work begins.

Thoughtful, individualized massage therapy that treats the person—not just the pain.

A lot of people think the massage starts when I walk into the room and begin treatment.

For me, it starts much earlier.

It starts with a conversation.

I'll ask what's bothering you, how it started, what makes it better or worse, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping to get out of today's appointment.

Sometimes I'll watch how you move.

Sometimes I'll ask a few more questions.

Sometimes what you tell me completely changes the treatment plan.

That's because I'm not trying to fit you into a routine.

I'm trying to understand your body.

The best treatment isn't based on a protocol.

It's based on the person in front of me.

That's why no two massages at Brookfield Massage are exactly the same.

One of the first questions people ask me is, "How deep do you work?"

My answer is always...

It depends.

It depends on you.

There isn't one "right" massage.

The best treatment depends on your body, your goals, how you're feeling that day, and what we're trying to accomplish together.

Sometimes deep pressure is exactly what's needed.

Sometimes lighter, more specific work allows your muscles to relax and respond much better.

Sometimes we spend the entire appointment focused on one stubborn area.

Other times, we realize the pain you're feeling is actually coming from somewhere completely different.

The goal isn't to give every client the same massage.

The goal is to understand your body and give it the treatment it needs that day.

That's why every treatment at Brookfield Massage is individualized.

Because no two bodies are the same.
