What causes onycholysis, and why can it happen to anyone?

Onycholysis is when the natural nail separates from the nail bed, creating a space underneath the nail.

Common causes include:

▪️ Trauma and repeated micro-trauma
▪️ Over-filing or mechanical damage
▪️ Chemical burns
▪️ Household chemicals without gloves
▪️ Fungal or bacterial infections
▪️ Skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema
▪️ Thyroid disorders or diabetes
▪️ Certain nutritional deficiencies or medications

‼️ Why does it matter?

The space underneath the nail can trap water, dirt and bacteria, allowing the separation to progress.

A nail with active onycholysis should not be covered. The area needs to be properly cleaned and allowed to grow out.

❗️Never try to clean underneath it yourself with scissors or a file — you can make the damage worse or cause an infection.

A professional nail tech should refuse to cover an affected nail. Health always comes first.

Depending on the cause and the individual, it can take 3–12 months for the damaged nail to fully grow out.
