Tomorrow, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day is for honouring the Survivors of residential schools, remembering the children who never returned home, and recognizing the families and communities who continue to live with the lasting impacts of the residential school system.
September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, inspired by the story of residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad. The message that Every Child Matters reminds us of the children whose safety, culture, identity, language and connection to family and community were taken from them.
Truth and reconciliation require more than acknowledgement on one day. They require listening, learning and a willingness to better understand both the history and the ongoing experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
We encourage our community to take time to:
• Wear orange and understand the meaning behind it
• Learn about the history and legacy of residential schools
• Listen to and learn from Indigenous Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and communities
• Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action
• Participate in Indigenous-led events and learning opportunities in your community
• Support Indigenous-led organizations, businesses, artists and initiatives
• Reflect on how each of us can contribute to reconciliation beyond September 30
We honour the children who never came home, the Survivors who did, and the generations of families and communities affected.
Every Child Matters. 🧡

Grief can be especially difficult for children to understand and express.
After one of our young clients lost someone deeply important to them, their counsellor, Triana, found a gentle and meaningful way to help them navigate that loss. Together, they created a teddy bear using shirts that had belonged to their loved one.
This beautiful creation reflects the care and creativity Triana brings to her work, as well as her ability to recognize what may feel most meaningful for each individual client.
At Bloom, this is how we intend to be different. We recognize that counselling is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Every person experiences grief, healing and connection differently, and we strive to meet each client where they are with compassion, flexibility and care.
Sometimes, support is found through conversation. Other times, it is found through creating something tangible to hold onto.
