Truth is that more than 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families & communities and forced into residential school a system described by the Truth & Reconciliation Commission as “𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒅𝒆.” Truth is that today we honour residential school survivors, their families, their communities, & the children who never made it home. Truth is that reconciliation cannot happen without truth. We must acknowledge & openly confront the harms caused by colonial & systemic policies, recognize their lasting impacts, & 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈.

Reconciliation means:

Documenting, listening to, & bearing witness to the experiences of survivors, their families, & their communities.

Teaching the truth about residential schools and other historical injustices, while recognizing how their impacts continue to affect Indigenous people and communities today.

Creating respectful relationships based on trust, understanding, cooperation, accountability, & meaningful action, not just words.

Accountability for our governments & our elected leadership. This hair appointment was booked months ago, & it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I realized my client was going to be part of a wedding for someone I knew from childhood! Another weekend where life did a full circle from Bible Camp to the Isle 🥹🥰❤️ Yesterday was such a beautiful day spent with these ladies. It was so sweet getting to catch up, laugh, & see some familiar little habits from childhood/teen years still making an appearance in adulthood. 🤭😂 Some things really never change!

Throwing it back to 2 years ago.

My little man has always had such a soft spot for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. He would always find his own little ways to express himself, show his support, & honour the survivors & their stories. These braids were one of his ways of wearing that support proudly to especially honour his (now-late) Grandpa, a Residential School Survivor. He’s always been the sweetest boy since he was wee little, watching him carry that love, respect, & remembrance in his own little way is something I’ll always treasure. 🥰❤️
