My friend and I did a Pin Pillow class at the rooms. Fantastic class! Here's some history :)
During WWI, soldiers on active duty were encouraged to put together these keepsakes—creating delicate pin cushions that carried immense emotional weight. These weren’t just pretty tokens; they were messages of love, survival, and longing pinned into fabric.
Often crafted on military bases with kits supplied by the YMCA or the Salvation Army, these hand-sewn pieces were sent home mostly to mothers and sweethearts. Filled with saw dust. Embroidered with regimental badges, patriotic phrases, or simple words like “Remember Me,” they gave men a way to process trauma and maintain a connection with home.
