Tallow has helped introduce many people to anhydrous skincare: concentrated formulations created without water.

It is often promoted as being similar to human sebum because tallow contains several fatty acids also found among the lipids on our skin. What is discussed less often is that this relationship is not exclusive to animal fat.

Shea and mango butters also contain fatty acids valued in skincare, including oleic and stearic acids. Golden jojoba is technically a liquid wax composed primarily of wax esters—a class of lipids also found naturally in human sebum.

None of these ingredients is identical to the skin’s own sebum. What matters is the complete formulation: the ingredients selected, their proportions and how they perform together on the skin.

A tallow balm begins with rendered animal fat.

Amber & Ash begins with plant butters and botanical oils. That plant-based foundation gives us the freedom to adjust the balance of shea, mango, golden jojoba and other selected oils for different formulations and purposes.

Both belong to the growing waterless-skincare category.

WHY SHEA AND MANGO BUTTERS?

In waterless skincare, every ingredient must earn its place.

Shea butter is rich in fatty acids that help soften dry, rough skin and reinforce the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Mango butter brings its own conditioning fatty acids, complementing shea with a lighter feel that leaves the skin supple rather than heavily coated.

Together, they form the botanical foundation of Botanical Bliss Body Balm.

Golden jojoba oil—technically a liquid wax with an affinity for the skin’s natural oils—helps condition and protect against moisture loss. Fractionated coconut oil carries the balm easily across the skin, while arrowroot and tapioca starch soften the finish and reduce excess oiliness.

The formulation also contains 4% non-nano zinc oxide, cosmetic gold mica, vitamin E, vanilla and Virginian cedarwood.

No water. No diluted lotion base. A concentrated botanical balm formulated for skin exposed to dryness, frequent washing and the Canadian elements.

The Amber & Ash Ritual was created with two purposes: to help you apply an anhydrous balm properly—and to remind you to take a moment for yourself.

Unlike a conventional lotion or cream, an anhydrous balm is a concentrated blend of plant butters, botanical oils and carefully selected minerals. A small amount is all you need.

Take a small amount with your fingertips.

Melt the balm between the palms, allowing your body heat to soften the plant butters and botanical oils.
