NOT EVERY HERB IS PREPARED THE SAME WAY.

Peppermint gives us a perfect example.

You’re working with the leaf of the plant.

Leaves are commonly prepared as an infusion—hot water poured over the plant material and allowed to steep.

Why?

Because leaves contain many aromatic and water-soluble constituents that can be extracted without the prolonged simmering typically used for tougher plant materials such as roots and barks.

And peppermint has another reason to respect the preparation:

🌿 Aroma matters.

Those aromatic compounds contribute heavily to peppermint’s characteristic sensory experience.

So instead of boiling your peppermint aggressively for a long time, think:

Hot water → cover → steep → strain.

The cover matters too.

If you’ve ever opened a cup of peppermint tea and immediately smelled that beautiful minty aroma rising away…

That’s your reminder that plants contain volatile compounds.

The goal isn’t simply to make water hot.

The goal is to prepare the plant appropriately.

WHY HAS PEPPERMINT BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH DIGESTION FOR SO LONG?

Peppermint isn’t a modern “wellness trend.”

Peppermint leaf has a long history of traditional use for digestive complaints.

Modern herbal monographs also recognize peppermint leaf preparations for traditional use in problems such as indigestion and flatulence.

But here’s where it gets interesting:

Peppermint isn’t simply one chemical.

The plant contains a mixture of constituents, including volatile compounds that give peppermint its characteristic aroma and sensory effects.

So when herbalists talk about a plant, we’re not necessarily talking about one isolated “active ingredient.”

We’re talking about a plant matrix.

Multiple constituents.

Different concentrations.

Different extraction methods.

Different plant parts.

Different preparations.

That’s why:

🌿 Leaf ≠ essential oil
🍵 Tea ≠ concentrated extract
🌱 Whole plant material ≠ isolated compound

Same plant.

Very different preparations.

Understanding that distinction is one of the foundations of responsible herbal practice.

🌿 HOW DO YOU PREPARE AN HERB?

Not every plant is prepared the same way.

🌸 Flowers and leaves are commonly prepared as infusions, pouring hot water over the plant and allowing it to steep.

🌳 Roots, bark and tougher plant materials are traditionally prepared differently, often through decoction, where the plant material is gently simmered.

The plant itself helps determine the preparation.

Know your plant. Know your preparation.
