A new study published in Pediatrics warns that viral TikTok skincare routines—often led by influencers as young as seven—may be doing more harm than good. Users are layering multiple active ingredients and spending an average of $168 a month on complex regimens.

Researchers found that popular videos heavily promote products with chemical exfoliants like alpha-hydroxy acids, yet only 26% mention sunscreen. This raises serious concerns about skin irritation, sun damage, and long-term allergies—especially in children with healthy skin.

Even more concerning: 76% of the top skincare videos featured at least one known allergen. Many creators showcase flawless, fair skin, fueling unrealistic beauty standards and pressuring kids to treat issues they don’t actually have, according to dermatologists.
