Why do I shrink wrap my soaps?

At first glance, it might seem like an odd choice for a handcrafted product, but there’s a reason behind it.

At markets, many people pick up, smell, and admire the soaps before choosing their favourite. Wrapping each bar helps keep it clean, fresh, and protected until it reaches its new home.

I chose a compostable, biodegradable shrink film because it provides that protection while also being designed to break down naturally over time—typically within 2–3 years, rather than remaining in the environment for decades.

Every decision I make—from the ingredients I choose to the packaging I use—is made thoughtfully, with both quality and sustainability in mind. 💚

One of the things that’s important to me when choosing ingredients for Sylva & Sage Collective is understanding where they come from and the people behind them.

That’s why I source my shea butter from Baraka Shea, a Canadian social enterprise that works directly with women’s cooperatives in Ghana, helping to create sustainable livelihoods while bringing beautiful, high-quality shea butter to artisans like me here in Canada.

I thought this Reel was too good not to share. It offers a wonderful glimpse into the journey of shea butter—from the women who harvest and process it to the ingredient that eventually becomes part of my handmade soaps and body care products.

Fresh off the cutter. 🌊

One of my favourite parts of soapmaking is cutting into a fresh loaf and seeing the design for the very first time. Every loaf is a little different, and no two bars are ever exactly alike.

These Midnight Storm bars are now curing and will spend the next several weeks becoming a long-lasting, gentle bar that’s ready for everyday use.

I’m taking some time away to visit my grandson, so I won’t be at the McMurray Farmers’ Market for a few weeks. I’ll be back soon with lots of freshly cured soaps and other Sylva & Sage favourites.
