💜 CAN MY BODY STILL BE PROTECTING AN INJURY THAT HAPPENED YEARS AGO?

Yes—even after an injury has healed, your body may continue using the protective patterns it developed during that experience.

Maybe you once:

✨ Fell on your tailbone
✨ Had a car accident
✨ Tore a ligament
✨ Underwent surgery
✨ Experienced a difficult birth
✨ Lived through physical or emotional trauma

At the time, your body adapted to keep you safe. You may have tightened certain muscles, shifted your posture, held your breath differently, or changed how you moved.

But sometimes the danger passes…and the protection remains.

Years later, that pattern may show up as:

💜 Recurring pain or tightness
💜 One hip or shoulder sitting higher
💜 Jaw clenching
💜 Shallow breathing
💜 Feeling guarded when touched
💜 Difficulty fully relaxing
💜 Pain that returns despite treating the same spot

From a trauma-informed JFB Myofascial Release perspective, I don’t look only at where you hurt. I listen to the whole body and explore where it may still be bracing, compensating, or holding tension.

Through gentle, sustained pressure and awareness, we create an opportunity for the fascial and nervous systems to recognize:

“I survived. I’m safe now. I don’t have to keep protecting this the same way.”

Your body isn’t betraying you.

It may still be trying to protect you with a pattern that is no longer needed.

Healing isn’t about forcing your body to let go. It’s about helping it feel safe enough to soften. 💜

Have you ever wondered whether an old injury is still affecting how your body feels today?

💜 WHAT DOES GERALD POLLACK’S RESEARCH HAVE TO DO WITH MYOFASCIAL RELEASE?

For decades, John F. Barnes has taught that fascia is much more than the body’s “wrapping.”

He describes the fascial system as a continuous, fluid-rich, responsive environment—and has proposed that changes within this system may help explain what we feel during sustained Myofascial Release.

Interestingly, research from Gerald Pollack, PhD, professor of bioengineering, offers findings that overlap with parts of this bigger conversation.

💧 WATER MAY BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY NEAR HYDROPHILIC SURFACES

Pollack and colleagues demonstrated large “exclusion zones” (EZs) next to certain hydrophilic surfaces—including biological tissues.

In these regions, water behaves differently from the surrounding bulk water: solutes are excluded, electrical charge separation can occur, and Pollack has proposed that the water becomes more ordered. (PubMed) - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16952332/

Why is that interesting for fascia?

Because fascia and the extracellular matrix are highly hydrated environments.

Pollack himself published an article titled:

“The Fourth Phase of Water: a role in fascia?” (PubMed) - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24139011/

This raises fascinating questions about whether the behavior of interfacial water could contribute to how connective tissues transmit forces, organize themselves, and respond to their environment.

✨ WHERE THIS INTERSECTS WITH JOHN F. BARNES’ THEORY

Barnes has long taught concepts involving:

💜 The fluid nature of the fascial system
💜 The importance of sustained pressure rather than force
💜 Phase transition within the fascial system
💜 Piezoelectric and bioelectrical phenomena
💜 Mechanotransduction
💜 Whole-body communication through the connective-tissue matrix

Pollack’s research does not prove the entire JFB Myofascial Release model.

But it provides an intriguing scientific framework for asking deeper questions about something Barnes has emphasized for decades:

We cannot fully understand living fascia by thinking of it as dry, inert connective tissue.

Water, charge, interfaces, mechanical forces and the extracellular matrix may all matter.

And science is still figuring out exactly how.

🔬 IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT

The exclusion-zone phenomenon itself has been reproduced by multiple research groups. However, Pollack’s explanation that EZ water represents a distinct, highly ordered “fourth phase” remains debated, and alternative mechanisms have been proposed. (PubMed Central (PMC)) -https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7404113/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

That doesn’t make the research irrelevant.

It makes it an active scientific question.

And this is where I think John Barnes was ahead of his time:

He encouraged therapists to stop looking at the human body as isolated muscles, bones and parts—and begin experiencing it as an interconnected, hydrated, dynamic system.

Maybe the question isn’t:

“Has science proven everything Barnes taught?”

Maybe the better question is:

“What is emerging science beginning to help us understand about what therapists have been feeling with their hands for decades?” 💜

WHAT DOES “FOLLOWING THE TISSUE” MEAN IN JOHN F. BARNES MYOFASCIAL RELEASE? 💜

In John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, we don’t force the body where we think it should go.

**We listen with our hands. It’s intuitive healing. **

“Following the tissue” means feeling for the subtle direction the fascial system wants to move—and allowing the body to guide the treatment.

Instead of forcing a stretch, pushing harder, or trying to mechanically “fix” something, the therapist applies gentle, sustained pressure and waits. Where is hot, hard or tender?

✨ Where does the tissue soften?
✨ Where does it resist?
✨ Where does it begin to move?
✨ Where does the body lead next?

Sometimes the direction that creates the greatest change isn’t where the pain is.

That’s why JFB Myofascial Release is so different from simply following a protocol.

The tissue becomes the guide.

As restrictions begin to soften, another layer may reveal itself. The therapist continues to follow what they feel rather than imposing what they think should happen.

It becomes a conversation without words:

Hands → tissue → response → follow → wait → release.

This requires patience, sensitivity, presence, and trust.

The skilled therapist isn’t chasing symptoms.

They’re listening for the body’s roadmap.

And sometimes, the body takes us somewhere completely unexpected.

💜 The body often knows where it needs to go—we have to become quiet enough to listen.

Have you ever received bodywork where you could actually feel your body guiding the movement?

WHAT CAN FASCIAL RESTRICTIONS LOOK LIKE? 👀

Fascial restrictions aren’t always obvious.

Sometimes they show up as pain.
Sometimes they show up as postural changes.
And sometimes your body has compensated for so long that what feels “normal” may actually be a pattern of restriction.

Fascial restrictions may show up as:

✨ One shoulder sitting higher than the other
✨ A head that naturally tilts or rotates to one side
✨ Uneven hips or a rotated pelvis
✨ One leg appearing shorter
✨ Forward-head posture
✨ Rounded shoulders
✨ A rib cage that looks or moves differently from side to side
✨ Limited ability to turn your neck
✨ Difficulty reaching one arm overhead
✨ Tightness that keeps returning after stretching
✨ A foot that turns inward or outward
✨ Uneven weight distribution when standing
✨ A jaw that shifts when opening
✨ Facial asymmetry
✨ Scar tissue that feels tight, thick, or “stuck”
✨ A body that seems twisted, compressed, or pulled to one side
✨ Chronic pain with no obvious explanation on imaging

Think of fascia like a three-dimensional web throughout the body. When one area loses mobility, the effects may be felt somewhere completely different.

That’s why I don’t just ask:

“Where does it hurt?”

I’m looking at:

Where is the body pulling?
Where has it adapted?
Where is movement missing?
What is the rest of the body doing to compensate?

With John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, we treat the whole fascial system, not simply the location of the symptoms.

Your posture tells a story.
Your movement tells a story.
Your compensations tell a story.

The body is always communicating. 💜

Where do you notice asymmetry in your own body?

YOUR BACK PAIN MAY NOT BE STARTING IN YOUR BACK. 👀

You stretch your back.
You strengthen your core.
You get adjusted.
You massage the painful spot.

But the pain keeps coming back.

Why? Because sometimes the painful area isn’t the root of the problem.

Your pelvis is the foundation for your spine and plays a major role in how your body distributes weight and maintains its center of gravity.

When the pelvis isn’t moving or loading evenly, your body may compensate:

⚖️ One hip may sit or move differently
⚖️ One leg may take more load
⚖️ Your spine may compensate
⚖️ Muscles can work overtime to stabilize you
⚖️ Fascial tension can develop throughout the hips, pelvis and back

Eventually, your low back may be the area that starts screaming for attention—even when the contributing restriction is somewhere else.

This is why I don’t just chase the painful spot.

With John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, I assess the whole fascial system and look at the pelvis, sacrum, hips, legs, rib cage and spine to identify restrictions that may be influencing your posture and movement.

When we improve pelvic balance and mobility, the body may be able to redistribute forces more efficiently and find a more centered, adaptable posture.

✨ Better balance
✨ Improved mobility
✨ Less compensatory tension
✨ More efficient movement
✨ Less strain through the low back

Your center of gravity matters.

When your foundation is constantly compensating, everything above it has to adapt.

Instead of asking only:

“Where does it hurt?”

I also ask:

“What is making your body compensate?”

That’s where the deeper work begins. 💜

I echo this!!

3 Things I Notice in Almost Every Chronic Pain Client 👇

After treating people with chronic pain for over 22 years, I’ve learned that pain is rarely just about the place that hurts.

Here are 3 patterns I see over and over again:

1. Their body is full of compensation.
The painful area is often working overtime because another part of the body has lost mobility. The body will always find a way to keep you moving—even if it creates pain in the process.

2. Their nervous system is stuck in protection mode.
When the body doesn’t feel safe, muscles tighten, fascia becomes restricted, and healing slows down. Sometimes the body isn’t broken—it’s protecting itself.

3. They have fascial restrictions far away from where they feel pain.
I’ve seen headaches connected to the pelvis, shoulder pain related to the rib cage, and foot pain improve after releasing restrictions in the hips. The body is connected through one continuous fascial system.

✨ Pain is information—not your identity.

When we stop chasing symptoms and begin listening to the whole body, healing becomes possible.

Have you been treating the site of your pain without lasting relief? I’d love to hear your experience below.

Treat the Whole Person, Not Just the Diagnosis. 💜

Pain is rarely just about the place that hurts.

Your body is an interconnected fascial system where every structure influences another. A headache may begin with restrictions in the jaw, neck, pelvis, or even an old scar. Low back pain may be connected to the feet, diaphragm, or emotional tension your body has been carrying for years.

This is why true healing goes beyond chasing symptoms.

✨ Treat the body.
✨ Support the nervous system.
✨ Listen to the story.
✨ Honor the emotions.
✨ Restore movement.
✨ Create safety.

When we only focus on one body part, we often miss the bigger picture.

At Body Resonance Myofascial Wellness Center, I believe in treating the whole person—body, mind, and nervous system—because lasting change happens when we address the root causes, not just the symptoms.

Healing isn’t about fixing broken parts.
It’s about helping the entire body remember how to heal.

💜 Your body has incredible wisdom. Sometimes it simply needs the right environment to release, adapt, and restore balance.

Have you ever treated one area of your body only to discover the real source of your pain was somewhere completely different?

💧 Why Hydration Alone Doesn’t Hydrate Fascia

You’ve probably heard, “Drink more water.” And while staying hydrated is essential for overall health, water alone doesn’t automatically hydrate your fascia.

Fascia is a living, three-dimensional connective tissue system made up of collagen, elastin, and a gel-like extracellular matrix ECM. Healthy fascia depends on much more than just water intake.

✨ What fascia needs to stay healthy:
💧 Adequate hydration
🤸 Regular movement and gentle stretching
🫁 Deep diaphragmatic breathing
❤️ Healthy circulation and lymphatic flow
👐 Sustained myofascial release to restore tissue mobility

When fascia becomes restricted from trauma, surgery, repetitive strain, inflammation, or chronic stress, the extracellular matrix can become thick, dehydrated, and less able to allow water to move freely through the tissue.

That means you can drink plenty of water and still have dehydrated, restricted fascia.

Myofascial Release helps restore mobility within the fascial system, improving the environment where hydration, circulation, and nourishment can move more efficiently throughout the tissues.

💜 Healthy fascia isn’t just about drinking water—it’s about restoring the tissue’s ability to absorb, distribute, and utilize it.

✨ Question:
How much water do you drink each day—and do you notice your body feels different after movement or Myofascial Release?
