Rear-ended last week and feeling fine? Whiplash often does not show up right away.

After a collision, the neck can feel okay for a day or two while the adrenaline is still up. Then the stiffness, headaches, and reduced range of motion arrive. This is common, and it is a reason not to wait to get assessed even if you walked away feeling alright.

What an early assessment does. It establishes a baseline of how your neck is moving now, starts gentle movement to keep things from locking up, and gets a recovery plan in motion while the injury is fresh. Beverly Physiotherapy direct-bills MVA claims, so for approved claims your assessment and treatment are zero out of pocket, and we handle the paperwork.

You do not need a doctor's referral in Alberta to book a physio assessment. Bring your claim number to your first visit and we take it from there. East-end patients have trusted our team to walk them through recovery, one step at a time.

Pickleball is having a summer in Edmonton, and so is pickleball elbow.

That nagging ache on the outside of the elbow is usually tennis elbow, an overuse irritation of the tendons that run from your forearm to the joint. All those quick wrist snaps and repeated d***s add up, especially when you jump from zero games a week to five.

How to keep playing without making it worse. Warm up your wrists and forearms before you step on the court. Check your paddle grip size and string or surface, since a grip that is too small makes the forearm work harder. Build your playing volume up gradually instead of back-to-back marathon sessions. And ice the elbow after a long day on the court.

If the ache lingers between games, grips weakly when you pick up a kettle, or has been there for weeks, an assessment can get you ahead of it before the season slips by.

Sciatica gets a lot of bad advice. Let us clear up three common myths.

Myth one, you just need to rest it. Resting in bed for days usually makes sciatica worse, not better. Gentle movement keeps the nerve gliding and the muscles from stiffening.

Myth two, sciatica always means a serious disc problem. Often the symptoms come from the nerve being irritated or compressed along its path, and they settle with the right plan. Imaging is not always needed to start treatment.

Myth three, surgery is the only real fix. For most people, the leg pain improves over weeks with a guided combination of movement, specific exercises, and activity changes. Surgery is the exception, not the starting point.

What sciatica feels like, for the record. A pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of one leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness.

If that sounds like you, an assessment can sort out what is actually driving it and what to do about it.

Shoulder aching after a weekend of yard work, painting, or overhead lifting? That is often the rotator cuff letting you know it was working harder than it is used to.

The rotator cuff is a group of small muscles that keep your shoulder stable through every reach overhead. When you suddenly ask it for a lot of overhead work, or load it without warming up, it gets irritated, and reaching for a seatbelt or a top shelf becomes the moment you notice it.

What helps early. Ease off the overhead movements for a few days rather than pushing through. Keep the shoulder moving gently within a comfortable range so it does not stiffen. And when you do return to the activity, build the volume up gradually instead of all at once.

Sharp pain, weakness lifting the arm, or pain that wakes you when you roll onto it are signs to get assessed rather than wait.

Knee pain going down stairs but fine going up? That pattern is common, and the knee is often not the real problem.

Weak hips and tight thigh muscles change how the kneecap tracks, and the knee takes the load. The good news is this responds well to targeted strengthening rather than rest alone.

If stairs, squats, or sitting for a while are bringing it on, an assessment can pinpoint what is driving it and build a plan around it.

The garden looks great. Your lower back, not so much.

Every July we see the same thing. A full Saturday of weeding, planting, and hauling bags of soil, and by Sunday the back has seized up. It is rarely one big injury. It is hours of bending and twisting in the same direction that adds up.

How to save your back in the yard. Get low by bending your knees and hips instead of rounding your back over the bed. Switch tasks every 20 to 30 minutes so you are not stuck in one position. Kneel on a pad rather than stooping. And carry soil and water close to your body, not out at arm's length.

Already stiff after a big yard day? Gentle movement and a short walk beat lying still. If it has not eased in a few days, or if there is pain down the leg, get it looked at.

That sharp stab in your heel with the first steps out of bed? Welcome to plantar fasciitis season.

Every summer the flat sandals and flip-flops come out, and the thin band of tissue under your foot loses the support it had all winter. The result is heel pain that bites first thing in the morning and after you have been sitting a while.

A few things that help. Roll the bottom of your foot over a frozen water bottle for a few minutes in the evening. Before your feet hit the floor in the morning, loop a towel around the ball of your foot and gently pull the toes toward you to stretch the arch. And give your feet a break from flat sandals on long walking days.

If the heel pain has been hanging around for more than two weeks, an assessment can pinpoint the cause and get you ahead of it before patio season is over.

Sore neck and shoulders by the end of the day? Look down at your phone for a second. That angle is the problem.

When your head tilts forward to read a screen, the load on your neck climbs fast. Hold that for hours a day, every day, and the muscles at the base of your skull and across your shoulders stay switched on long after you put the phone down.

Two things that help. One, bring the screen up to eye level instead of dropping your chin to it. Two, every 30 minutes, gently draw your chin straight back like you are making a double chin, hold five seconds, repeat five times. It resets the posture without any equipment.

If the ache has turned into headaches, tingling down the arm, or pain that wakes you up, it is worth getting assessed rather than waiting it out.
