The Physics of the "Blood Moon"A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow (the umbra) across the lunar surface. While you might expect the Moon to go completely dark, it instead glows with a deep red hue due to Rayleigh Scattering.
Atmospheric Filtering: As sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere, the shorter wavelengths (blue and violet) are scattered away.

Refraction: The longer wavelengths (red and orange) are bent, or refracted, inward toward the Earth's shadow.The "Sunset" Effect: In essence, the red light hitting the Moon during an eclipse is the combined light of every sunrise and sunset occurring on Earth at that exact moment.

Factors Influencing the Shade of Red

The intensity and darkness of the red can vary significantly based on terrestrial conditions. Scientists use the Danjon Scale to classify the appearance of a total lunar eclipse:
