If your nails repeatedly peel, break, lift or struggle to hold enhancements, changing products isn't always the answer.
Sometimes we need to look at the bigger picture.
Your nail condition, previous services, maintenance habits, lifestyle and expectations can all influence how a manicure performs.
That is why I prefer to understand what is happening before simply adding another layer of product.
For clients who aren't sure what service they need, a Nail Assessment Appointment allows us to look at the nails first and create a more appropriate plan.

Scar camouflage isn't only about matching colour.
Two scars can look similar from a distance but behave very differently when examined closely.
Colour matters because pigment needs to blend naturally with the surrounding skin.
Texture matters because camouflage does not remove raised, indented or irregular scar tissue.
When texture is the primary concern, another approach such as inkless revision may need to be considered before pigment camouflage.
This is why I assess both the colour and the condition of the tissue before creating a treatment plan.
What actually happens during a paramedical tattoo consultation?
We talk first.
I want to understand what concerns you, how the area has healed, your treatment history and what you realistically hope to improve.
Then I assess the skin and discuss whether I believe treatment is appropriate and which approach may make sense.
You also have an opportunity to ask questions about the process, healing, expected results and limitations.
You should understand what you are agreeing to before deciding whether to proceed.
For me, consultation is where responsible treatment begins.

A damaged toenail isn't always caused by one major injury.
Sometimes it is the result of small amounts of pressure happening repeatedly.
Running, hiking, tight shoes, long downhill walks and repeated impact against the front of footwear can gradually affect the nail.
If the same toenail keeps bruising, lifting or growing differently, simply covering it with polish doesn't address why it keeps happening.
During a pedicure, I pay attention to the condition of the natural nail as well as the cosmetic result.
Your feet often tell us a lot about how they are being used.

As the crisp autumn air settles over Vancouver, I find myself adjusting my nail care routine, and I want to share a few tips with you. Our downtown weather can be tough on hands, so a little extra care goes a long way.
Why your routine needs to shift:
- Hydration is key: Cooler winds strip moisture. I recommend switching to a richer cuticle oil and using it daily.
- Strength matters: Biab or structured gel manicures are ideal now. They act as a protective shield against breakage, keeping your natural nails strong through the season.
My professional advice at our Granville studio:
- I focus on nail health first. A dry pedicure or natural base helps your nails breathe, which is essential as humidity drops.
- Book a consultation with me to find what best supports your nails this autumn.
Come see me for a tailored, calm experience that prepares you for the months ahead. ๐

When is a scar ready for camouflage?
A scar needs time to mature before paramedical tattooing should be considered.
Rather than looking only at how many months have passed, I also look at the scar itself its colour, texture, sensitivity and overall stability.
If the tissue still appears actively healing, irritated or unstable, I may recommend waiting.
There is no benefit in rushing the process.
Working with healed, stable tissue gives us a much better foundation for creating a natural-looking result.

Working in nails and paramedical tattooing has taught me something important:
Not everything needs to be โfixed.โ
Sometimes care means restoring. Sometimes it means improving something that has been bothering you. And sometimes it means understanding what is normal and deciding that nothing needs to change at all.
My role is not to create insecurity so that I can sell a treatment.
It is to provide honest information, realistic expectations and professional care so you can make the decision that feels right for you.
That philosophy guides both sides of my work at Shibui.
BIAB, hard gel or acrylic?
There isn't one product that is automatically best for everyone.
The right choice depends on your natural nails, desired length, lifestyle and how much structure or strength is needed.
BIAB can be a beautiful option for supporting natural nail growth. Hard gel provides additional structure and versatility, while acrylic remains useful when greater strength or certain types of extensions are required.
Rather than choosing a service because it is trending, I prefer to look at what your nails actually need.
Beautiful nails should still respect the natural nail underneath.

A paramedical tattoo consultation is not simply about choosing a colour and booking a treatment.
I first need to understand the skin I will be working with.
I look at the age and stability of the scar, colour differences, texture, sensitivity, healing history and the result you are hoping to achieve.
From there, we can discuss whether camouflage, inkless revision, another approach or simply more healing time may be appropriate.
A thoughtful assessment is part of the treatment, not an extra step.

September is here, and I always notice how much our nails have been through after a busy summer. Sun, salt water, and constant hand sanitizing can leave them feeling dry and brittle. Thatโs why I love this time of year to hit reset and focus on natural nail health.
In my private studio on Granville Street, I create a calm space for exactly that. Hereโs how we can refresh together:
โจ A structured gel manicure โ strengthens and protects without damaging your natural nail
โจ BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) โ adds a thin, durable layer to help length grow safely
โจ A dry pedicure โ gentle, water-free care that prioritizes nail and cuticle health
Every treatment includes a consultation to understand your nail goals, so you leave with a plan that truly works for you.
If your nails are telling you they need a break, letโs take that step together.
