Jocelyn Proctor, Registered Massage Therapist

This is a difficult post for me to make. After 10 years of practicing as a massage therapist, my life has changed a lot. And with that, myself and my priorities have changed a lot as well. I have worked many evenings and weekends since the beginning of my career, and have met so many fabulous people who I consider friends and family. Some of these people have been with me for over 10 years, through all my life changes, always supporting me. Though a very tough decision, starting in April 2027, I will drastically be reducing my hours after 3:00pm. My son is five years old and time is flying by, and as most of you know, I am the only parent present in his life. Lately, every morning my heart breaks when my son asks "who's picking me up today?" He questions why I have to work so much, why do I have so many clients, why do other moms not have to work, why can't we live with somebody so everything isn't on me.... I'm over it. I'm exhausted. I am so stretched thin and things are just not getting done. This time is so fragile and once it's gone, it's gone. My mental and physical health have also taken a huge toll this year, and working late evenings has proven difficult to keep a routine when it comes to meals and looking after myself.

I don't know what my schedule will look like. I still plan to work until 8:00pm (not 9:00pm) one evening, and one until 5:00pm. Otherwise, all other days I will be finishing at 3:00pm so I'm ready and able to pick my son up from school, and provide. Though I have so much guilt doing this, as I have so many clients who require after 3:00pm - and who knows, it may not work financially for me. But if that is the case, I will have to pivot again. I'm no longer interested in 'keeping up' with those around me, because simply doing it on one income and as one person is just not possible anymore. I don't receive any financial support from my son's other parent and am owed thousands of dollars that I realistically will never see. I won't lie that it's hard, and I am exhausted. Hard to just want to have a normal, simple life and to enjoy the little things that you feel you work hard to deserve but get stripped of because you're trying to just get by. This town is really expensive and in the end, it may come down to me having to move elsewhere to make things more doable for me and my little guy, because at the end of the day, his happiness and success are my priority. And I'm finally starting to fully realize that in order for me to fully take care of him, I have to fully take care of me, too.
