What does a healthy skin barrier actually do?

“Skin barrier” has become one of those phrases you see everywhere in skincare, but understanding what it actually means is a lot more useful than simply buying another product with barrier written on the label.

Your skin’s outermost layer already has an important job, including helping limit how quickly moisture escapes. And when your skin regularly feels tight, dry, rough or uncomfortable, it may be worth looking at everything you’re doing to it before automatically adding something new.

Do you know the difference between beef suet and beef tallow?

They're often used interchangeably, but they're not actually the same thing.

Suet is where we start. Tallow is what we make from it.

Beef suet is the firm fat found primarily around the kidneys and loins. We slowly render that raw fat, filter it and turn it into the tallow that eventually becomes the foundation of much of our skincare.
And now we're able to tell you more about where ours starts, too.

Our beef suet comes from Meunier Livestock, the fourth-generation Alberta cattle operation behind 1899 Beef Co.The same Alberta beef is also available to consumers through Modern Pastures.

For a brand built around tallow, having a closer relationship with the agricultural source of our most important ingredient matters to us.
We don't purchase buckets of finished tallow from a cosmetic ingredient supplier. We start with the suet and take it from there.

Beef suet → rendered tallow → intentional formulation → finished skincare.

There are quite a few messy steps hiding behind that tidy little sentence.

And yes, we may be a tiny bit biased on this first recommendation—Rick also happens to be Mr. RBF. 😂
