Guarding isn’t dramatic. It’s quiet. It’s the shoulder that’s always a little higher than the other. The jaw that clenches every time you’re at a red light. The breath that never quite fills you up.

None of these mean something’s wrong with you. They mean your nervous system found a pattern and stuck with it.

Swipe through a few common ones and see if they land.

Proprioception is just a fancy word for your body knowing where it is in space — without looking. It's why you can scratch your nose with your eyes closed, or why your shoulders creep up to your ears before you've noticed you're stressed.

Here's the thing: most of us have blind spots in that system. Areas of tension, holding patterns, and compensations that have been running in the background so long, we've stopped registering them as "on."

Part of massage therapy is finding those spots with you — through assessment, through how your muscles respond to the work, through the referral patterns that show up along the way, connecting the dots between where you feel it and where it's actually coming from.

That noticing is helping develop your proprioceptive awareness. It's not separate from the massage, it's built into it.

If you’re in pain, the first move is usually to find a quick fix - something to calm things down and give you a break.

And that’s a great place to start.

But exploring the why behind your symptoms is where you start to take some control back.

Yoga Therapy is an approach Heather uses to help people who want to understand the whole picture.

What’s moving well. What isn’t. What’s moving instead.

What are your guarding patterns.

What are the movement patterns that have slipped past your notice.

Yoga Therapy with Heather is one-on-one, gentle and completely tailored.

It’s not a class, not a program.

It’s all about you, what your body is doing, and how it relates to your symptoms.

And the payoff is real: when you know your own body better, you catch things earlier. You move through your life - your workouts, your hikes, your mornings - with more ease and less guesswork.

It’s not about being more flexible. It’s about being more you.

Yoga Therapy with Heather can be done as a full hour session (not covered by insurance), or utilized as the assessment and homecare portions of a massage therapy appointment.

Some aches and pains just need a little time to clear up… but a little help can go a long way! Being proactive as early as possible can speed up the process AND make life more comfortable along the way. Book yourself a massage or add yourself to the waitlist if need be! Three things your body is doing right now that you’re not noticing. These things are all normal - we need to invite variety, challenge and breaks in our day to day lives and accept that our bodies fluctuate. We also want to avoid getting completely locked into patterns and under utilizing ways of moving. Adaptability leads to resiliency which leads to independence into our older years!

Yoga therapy is a vast field with applications across all kinds of wellness practices, but when I bring it into my work as an RMT, it's all about supporting my patients' movement patterns and helping them move through their days with more ease and less pain.

Our nervous systems rule every part of our bodies. Safety, support, stability and strength help our systems to relax and let us feel more ease. Take care of yourself and book a massage! Summer schedules are open and tend to shift with people’s plans. You may get in sooner than you expect!

Many say that massage is just a temporary fix.

And yeah, the relief doesn’t last forever. But that doesn’t make it less real or less useful.

When your nervous system gets a break from pain, a few things happen:

You sleep better. You move better. You can do the things you actually want to do with a little more ease. And maybe most importantly, your nervous system gets to experience that it doesn’t always have to feel that way.

If it can change for a few days, it can learn to change for longer.

That window of feeling better? That’s not nothing. That’s the door opening.

The soreness that seems to make no sense is often the most interesting kind.

Hiking. Paddling. Gardening. Weekend sports with kids. Drives to the lake. Even just crying more; coolers, bags, gear.

Summer asks a lot of us physically, and most of the time we don’t notice until something starts talking.

You don’t have to wait for that.

A massage right now isn’t a luxury. It’s just good timing. Your nervous system and muscles are carrying a lot. Giving them a chance to settle can make a real difference in how you feel for the rest of the season.
