The evidence speaks for itself. Here is just one example of the Study done by Doug where he tested 20 different lamps. Plenty more posts on his page to explain the science and evidence learned by the study he conducted. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER to do better to protect YOUR Health and that of your clients!

Image J โ€” Twenty Lamps, Twenty Different Fingerprints
This image is revealing. It shows the emission spectra of 20 different LED nail lamps, all sold commercially to the nail industry.
Now that you know how to read these curves, the pattern jumps right out. The wavelengths they emit and the intensities they reach differ enormously. No two are quite alike.

I am not naming these lamps by brand. I have arranged them from highest UV output at the top left to lowest at the bottom right, but that order is only to organize the chart. It is not a ranking of which lamp is best, for the reasons we covered earlier.

A lamp with somewhat less UV is not automatically worse. But there is a real difference between a lamp that has a little less UV and one that has almost none.

That brings us to the lamp in the lower right corner. Its output is mostly visible light, with very little UV. I bought it online for $20. It is a clear example of the risk of cheap, low-end lamps, because it is unlikely to properly cure any nail product. In testing, it hardened a few of the easier colors to only about 55 to 60 percent cured, and darker colors to only about 30-40 percent.

Here is the warning every tech needs to hear. Gel products begin to
feel hard once they pass about 50 percent cure, but feeling hard is NOT the same as being properly cured. A lamp can leave product hard on the surface and badly under-cured underneath. And under-curing is a major cause of adverse skin reactions. Beware!

Look closely and you will see that every one of these lamps is different, though some look similar at a glance. And this is only part of the story. There are other major differences between these lamps, in performance and in quality, that the next images will reveal.

The more you know... I've been seeing the terms "biogel' and 'solar gel' bandied about again
So here we go.
There's only the two reputable "Bio" Gels (you can refer to the attached images): One is short for "Biosculpture", the other is "Bioseaweed". Shortly after they came out, a lot of NSS (Non standard salons) hopped on the band wagon of it's popularity and started using the term, even if they weren't using the product. Now, there are even fake 'bio' gels private labelled from overseas with the word 'bio' slapped on them. Don't be misled. Inform yourself. Verify the packaging.
Solar Gel. No such thing. Once upon time there was a trend waaaaaaaay back when known as Solar nails developed by Creative Nail Design (ie: CND, creators of Shellac) who developed the system for creating Pink & White colored acrylic for permanent frenches. They called that acrylic system "Solar". Ding d**g the NSS shops came calling again and grabbed that term and slapped it onto their systems (the ol' bait and switch tactic) although they weren't using it.
"Powder gel". Again, no such thing. Powder + Purple liquid = Traditional Acrylic. UV Gel is ALWAYS gooey like honey, no powder, and requires a lamp to harden.
If a salon is misleading about the services they offer, is that a place that you can trust?

You think you've made the smarter choice with with DIY? https://www.facebook.com/share/1Cy8oonMcw/

There has been a recent increase in content showcasing professional nail products โ€“ but created by non-nail techs. Many claim that DIY nail kits offer a fast, cheap and easy nail solution, but that is far from the truthโ€ฆ

Here are the reasons why getting your nails done by a trained nail technician is always the best option: ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ€œNo two clients are the same, and this is something a nail professional will always take into account," says Melanie Lewendon (Melanie Lewendon Nail Artist & Training), Scratch Stars Educator of the Year 2024, Online Educator of the Year 2025 & Educator of the Year finalist for 2026. "A trained technician will assess your natural nails, lifestyle and preferences before choosing the most suitable products and techniques for you."

Elisha Micallef (), OPI UK senior field educator & Scratch Stars Educator of the Year finalist for 2026, says: โ€œProfessional nail technicians are highly trained in nail anatomy, health and chemistry. They know how to assess nails, therefore choose the right nail product or system for you โ€“ and apply it safely to reduce the risk of nail damage, allergic reactions and infection. In the last few years, experimenting with DIY application has caused a rise in nail damage and allergic reactions."

Michelle Brookes (Michelle Brookes Nail & Beauty Academy), Scratch Stars Educator of the Year 2025 & finalist for 2026, shares: โ€œNail professionals are trained to recognise nail disorders and conditions, so you can rest assured that your nails are in safe, knowledgeable hands. Unlike DIY attempts, a trained nail tech will never over-file, improperly remove a product or reach for a cheap formula: common mistakes that can weaken nails, cause lasting damage and lead to infection.โ€
