There is a conversation circulating about hair students performing services while the school receives the service revenue.
I understand why that can feel unfair when nobody clearly explains how practical education works. But hair school is not only the technical moment when the student holds the shears or colour brush.
Students are also learning consultation, reception, retail, sanitation, scheduling, client care, teamwork, inventory, timing and salon operations. Those are not unrelated chores. They are part of becoming employable in this industry.
That does not mean every school practice is automatically fair. Training should be relevant, properly supervised, rotated appropriately and designed to benefit the learner.
But learning how the entire salon functions is not exploitation simply because every task is not glamorous.
Hair professionals and students: where do you think practical training ends and unpaid labour begins?

Unfortunately, teaching hair has become my entire personality.
It’s not “just a bob.”
It’s a Solid Form.
0° elevation.
Natural fall.
Weight at the perimeter.
In the industry?
We call it a blunt cut. A classic bob. A Dutch boy.
Same haircut.
Different language.
Respect gravity. Respect the line.
Perfecting the shampoo service is one of the biggest client-retention tools in the salon.
It’s often overlooked — so we teach it with intention, skill, and high standards.
A little post fantasy show fun.... we are pretty cool....🤣🤣 ( I know its got some inappropriate language but it was fun 🤫🫣)
