Birth Doula availability update

Ultrasound scans in the third trimester of pregnancy have become routine offerings in Canada.

Why does this matter?

Well, there is no evidence to suggest that the scans improve outcomes for the pregnant person or for the baby.

What they have been shown to do is increase The likelihood of inaccurate fetal weight estimation (large or small) which intern can lead to anxiety and affect decision-making around things like induction of labour, place of birth and care provider.

The scans are different to non-stress test ultrasounds (NST) that are often offered For people between 40 and 42 weeks of pregnancy.

Whilst ultrasound scans have not been proven to cause any negative effect on the pregnant person or the baby, the RCOG, ACOG and the SOGC recommend as little exposure as possible to ultrasound frequencies and not having unnecessary ultrasounds as long-term effects are not known.

So, when your care provider offers to book you in for a routine third trimester ultrasound, you might want to ask what the benefits and risks of this are for you and your baby.

Use your: BRAINS (benefits, risks, alternatives, instinct, do nothing, space and time)

Join us for a community screening of Fear and Now, a documentary that explores fear, birth, the nervous system, and the cultural narratives that shape childbirth experiences.

This gathering is intended for Calgary-area HypnoBirthing® educators, birth workers, perinatal professionals, and others who are interested in supporting more informed, connected, and less fear-based approaches to birth.
As we began planning this event, it became clear that it could be more than simply a film screening. We hope it will also provide an opportunity for connection, conversation, and community-building among people who care deeply about supporting birthing families.

Following the screening, we will host an informal discussion exploring themes such as fear and birth, language and the nervous system, birth culture, and the role of supportive care in childbirth.

Time: 5:00–8:00 PM (screening, discussion, and hopefully a Q&A with the director/producer, along with a potluck supper)
Date: Saturday, June 27, 2026
Location: Lower Level, 1616 20A St NW, Calgary, AB (below the Birth Centre)

This is intended to be a relaxed, community-oriented gathering rather than a commercial event. The $25 registration fee helps cover the film screening and event costs.

Save your seat with a ticket - in person or online.

Space is limited to approximately 30 participants. Registration is confirmed upon payment and spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
We are also planning a casual potluck-style atmosphere for anyone who would like to bring something
simple to share.
We look forward to gathering with you for an evening of learning, reflection, and conversation.
Warmly,
Natalie, Marjorie, Toni, Monica, Charmagne
Your local Calgary HypnoBirthing® Educators

In French, there is a word for Doula, that isn’t Doula. It’s: L’accompagnement. Literally translated this means the accompaniment. And somebody who offers this is the accompanist. It’s maybe not quite as catchy, but to me, this encompasses much better the role.

A companion along the journey of transformation. A companion for this period of transition, birth and rebirth. A companion.

I am in service to you, yes. But I am not a servant. There is no power dynamic. There is no hierarchy. We are equals. One is looking for guidance, support and wisdom from the depths of the world womb. The other is guiding , supporting and sowing seeds to grow.

And seeds need tending. They need care and attention. They need nourishment and all of the bounties that nature provides. The time and space to gestate, bud and bloom.

It is a relationship that cannot be rushed. Too much will smother, not enough Will wither.

I am your companion. I am the accompanist to your Symphony.
