Generic flakes—what most people have—is just shedding skin, like what the rest of your body does, and the flakes are tiny.

Dandruff is a fungus overgrowth that typically looks like chunky flakes with a yellowish hue.

The distinction between the two is important because treatment for each is different since they have different causes.

Every client of mine who once thought they had dandruff actually just had generic flakes, from their scalp being too dry or not washed enough.

Just like if you wash your face and don't moisturize, if you shampoo your scalp but don't condition it, it can get flaky. Conditioner is so vital for maintaining healthy hair and scalp, but people sometimes say it's bad because they actually aren't rinsing it off properly. (So when you condition your scalp, rub and scrub while you rinse because you need that mechanical motion to get it off.)

For people who have a particularly dry scalp where just conditioner isn't enough, there's scalp conditioners that help. I'd recommend the Paul Mitchell tea tree hair and scalp treatment, not sponsored.

Flakes can also be managed by washing your hair every 3ish days (not too frequent or infrequent). Your scalp, like all of your skin, is constantly shedding. But on your head the shedding has no where to go—trapped by hair and oils—and builds up, until eventually you notice it as flakes. I personally have this problem. To manage this, you simply need to wash your hair, but be sure to scrub really well. I like to pre-scrub my scalp before my hands or hair are even wet by scrubbing it like I'm shampooing (like in the video). Everything being dry helps to loosen it better than when it's wet and sticking, so then when I shower it it comes off easily.

There's absolutely NO NEED to buy products labeled specifically for dandruff. That's literally just consumerism preying on you and the general fear and misunderstanding around this topic. As explained, flakes can be managed for FREE!

But if you actually have a fungus overgrowth then you need to see a doctor, over the counter products won't help.

Actually there's still one more way split ends can majorly interfere with your length goals:

When your hairdresser uses them to pressure you into a chop.

The amount of times this comes up (particularly in my comments) is why I will say this as many times as necessary:

LAYERS ONLY LOOK "CHOPPY" WHEN THEY'RE NOT STRAIGHTENED AND COMBED DOWN.

Thanks for coming to my TedTalk!

I seriously care about my clients so much, and so I also care when someone doesn't seem to be considerate of everyone else.

When an appointment is booked, that time is dedicated to you. No one—no matter how badly they want it—can book there anymore. Instead they have to wait, book a different day, and plan their schedule around that.

So to not respect the time that you requested be set aside for you, and think that maybe someone else will fill your spot, doesn't usually work out like that—it usually just means you use up twice the time.

And unfortunately not everyone understands that, which is why there need to be deterrents like cancellation policies.

HOWEVER!

Unforseeable circumstances and emergencies are a totally different story—which is why being the receptionist, stylist, and manager in my own business is so useful.

Because I get to see everything.

I see when someone shows patterns of disrespect, and when they don't. That means I have compassion when it's called for, and boundaries for everything else.

My policies have room for grace, but they also filter behaviours that don’t respect me or my other clients.

Thanks for understanding ♡

There's no treatment for split ends. Once your hair has literally come apart, nothing can put it back together again.

Those products that say they repair them? What they actually do is coat your hair in a sealant to make it seem like your problem has been fixed. But really, they're making it so much worse. Because having a coating on your hair prevents any real treatments or conditioners from being absorbed, and your hair gets more dry and brittle trapped inside.

If you've already been doing this, don't freak out, there's still hope. Just use a clarifying shampoo to remove the buildup and follow-up with either the K18 mask or Wella ultimate repair treatment. Then find yourself a hairdresser who does length-saving split-end trims. You may watch the linked video to see what that looks like ;)

Measurements are made up anyway, plus they make you nervous—make you doubt yourself.

Is it too much? Is it not enough?

Instead, I want us to focus on results.

What we're leaving behind is what really matters because it's what you'll actually be going home with.

It doesn't serve you to worry about rounding to the nearest inch—it's an arbitrary goalpost.

And why fit yourself into a box when the world already does that enough?

So when you just trust your gut, and throw out all social constructs, you might find that you feel so much more at peace with whatever happens next ;)

》Make sure that your sections line up at the top of your head
》When you're pulling the front section behind your ear make sure that it's exactly where you want it to sit, otherwise the tension will be off when you clip it and it won't look smooth
》If the clip isnt very secure, make sure youre putting it in going straight back, not up. And slide it right along your scalp so you're getting it as tight as possible
