A new client to me, but not new to knowing what their hair is capable of.

Their previous curly stylist had moved away, so they tried a couple of stylists closer to home. During our appointment they said, "Once you've had a proper curly haircut, there's no going back."

It's so true.

Even I trim my own hair between trips to the city for a proper curly cut, and every single time I end up thinking, "Why did I wait so long?"

The haircut they came in with was likely a beautiful haircut... for hair that was going to be styled straight. That's how many of us were taught in school—as though every client belongs in the same little 📦. And if they don't, we're often taught to chemically or physically change the hair until it fits the box, instead of realizing the box was never made for them.

I think that's why curly hair has become about so much more than hair for me.

I've spent far too much of my life trying to fit in—with my hair, my makeup, my clothes, even parts of my personality. Guess what? I did all of those things... and I still didn't fit in. I was just terrified of the day the mask I'd created would slip.

Curly hair taught me something different.

Maybe the goal was never to fit the box. Maybe the goal was to finally stop trying.
