Today is an opportunity to pause—not only to remember, but to learn.

For generations, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and communities and placed in residential schools. These institutions sought to separate children from their cultures, languages, families, and identities. The effects of that history continue to be felt by Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities today.

Truth comes before reconciliation. It means being willing to listen to Survivors, learn the history of this country, recognize the harm that was caused, and understand that reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility—not something that can be completed in a single day.

Today, we honour those who survived, remember those who never returned home, and hold space for the stories, cultures, languages, and voices that deserve to be heard.

May we carry that learning beyond September 30—not just with awareness, but with respect, compassion, and a willingness to do better.
