What is hairdressing school actually like, day to day?
Far more hands-on than most people expect. A career-track diploma runs roughly 1,500 training hours, and a typical week looks like a real workday: Monday to Friday, blending theory with hours of live practice on real hair.
Days move through the core skills in order: sectioning and designer cuts, then foils, balayage, and multidimensional colour, then advanced texture, extensions, and updos.
Legends Academy is PTIB-designated and StudentAid BC-approved, in Abbotsford.
Next Hairdressing cohort starts August 10, 2026. Apply free at legendsacademy.ca.
Where can you get an affordable manicure and pedicure that's actually done right?
At a cosmetology school's student salon. Supervised, hands-on training means prices run about half of a standard salon, and a licensed instructor checks every service.
At the Legends Academy student salon, your mani or pedi is done by a senior Nail Technology student in a full 400-hour program. Serving the Fraser Valley since 1992.

What do you actually learn in a medical esthetics program?
It goes far beyond spa facials. You're trained to operate advanced skincare technology under clinical standards: IPL, laser hair removal, skin tightening, radio frequency, and laser tattoo removal, built on a full esthetics foundation.
At Legends Academy, the Medical Esthetics Laser program runs 1060 hours over 48 weeks, at our Abbotsford campus.
Next Medical Esthetics and Laser cohort starts October 6, 2026. Apply free at legendsacademy.ca.
Does laser hair removal actually last?
Here's the honest version: laser gives permanent hair reduction, not total removal. It targets the pigment in each follicle, so hair grows back finer, lighter, and slower over a series of sessions.
At the Legends Academy student salon, laser and skin treatments are performed by advanced Medical Esthetics students under a licensed instructor, for about half of standard clinic pricing.

Can you get a job after hairdressing school, and what are the options?
Yes. A licensed stylist can work almost anywhere. Salon stylist, colour specialist, extension expert, bridal and updo artist, platform educator, or eventually your own chair or salon.
At Legends Academy, PTIB-designated and StudentAid BC-approved since 1992, the Hairdressing program runs 1500 hours over about 43 weeks. Campus in Abbotsford.
Next Hairdressing cohort starts August 10, 2026. Apply free at legendsacademy.ca.
What's the difference between foils, balayage, and highlights?
All three lighten strands. The technique is what changes the result. Foils weave and wrap sections so they lift to a bright, uniform, high-contrast result. Balayage is freehand, hand-painted for a sun-kissed, grown-out look with no harsh line.
At the Legends Academy student salon, senior Hairdressing students perform foils, balayage, and multidimensional colour under a licensed instructor, at about half of standard salon pricing.

How do you get vibrant, long-lasting hair colour?
Colour longevity is built at the chemistry stage, not just the chair. Fade-resistant results start with a proper strand and porosity check, the correct developer volume, and clean sectioning so every strand is saturated evenly.
At the Legends Academy student salon, colour is done by senior Hairdressing students under a licensed instructor, at about half of standard pricing. Legends is PTIB-designated, in the Fraser Valley since 1992.

Is it too late to change careers into beauty in your 30s or 40s?
Not even close. Career-changers are one of the fastest-growing groups in cosmetology, and the trades are built for it. Full retraining takes months, not years, and the skills go straight into paid work. A hairdressing licence in BC is about 1500 hours, roughly 43 weeks. Esthetics is 800 hours over 35 weeks. Medical esthetics with laser is 1060 hours over 48 weeks, training you to run IPL, laser hair removal, skin tightening, and radio frequency in medi-spas and clinics.
One of our students walked in from banking, tired of the 40-hour week and wanting freedom. Two and a half years and two programs later, they had built a business from home, grown it into a storefront, and left banking for good, doing hair and makeup full time.
Legends Academy has trained career-changers since 1992. PTIB-designated, StudentAid BC-approved, campuses in Abbotsford and Langley. Applying is free, with funding through StudentAid BC, an RESP, a line of credit, or monthly self-pay.
Next cohort starts August 7. Apply free at legendsacademy.ca, register by August 6.
How much does professional hair colour actually cost?
It's priced by service and how much product and time it takes. A single-process colour or root touch-up usually runs the least. Dimensional work like foils, balayage, or full multidimensional colour costs more because it uses more product and hours of skilled application. In most salons across Canada, that spans roughly $80 to well over $250 for advanced techniques. You're paying for the colourist's training and the time to place it correctly so the tone lasts.
There's a smarter way to get quality colour for less. At the Legends Academy student salon, senior students perform colour, foils, and balayage under a licensed instructor, at about half of standard pricing. Legends is PTIB-designated, training in the Fraser Valley since 1992, in Abbotsford and Langley.
