The EDC-Free Europe campaign was set up in March 2013 by a diverse group of campaign partners with a common concern about endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and how they may be affecting our health. EDCs are linked to serious health conditions such as cancers, fertility problems and diabetes and obesity. These chemicals are used in a wide range of everyday products and objects, including children’s toys, personal care, consumer and electronic products. They can also end up as residues on our food. The EDC-Free Europe coalition has launched a fun and creative Take Action 'photo initiative' as part of the campaign for an EDC-Free Future. Take action now to let governments know you want an EDC Free Future www.edc-free-europe.org/how-to-take-action

📣 The -Free Europe Coalition urges EU decision-makers to uphold the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability commitments in the revision.

Stronger protections from harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are long overdue — the EU must act to better protect health and the environment.

Currently, the Cosmetic Products Regulation prohibits the use of substances classified as carcinogenic. Exemptions can only be granted under strictly defined and limited conditions.

In a so-called “Reality Check Workshop” a few days ago, the European Commission presented proposals on how to “simplify” parts of the EU chemicals regulation. One file in line for the exercise: the Cosmetic Products Regulation.

During the meeting, the Commission proposed several changes to the regulation which would make it easier to use carcinogenic chemical substances in cosmetics and personal care products.

The scope of this regulation includes many everyday products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, and sunscreen.

Some chemical substances with carcinogenic properties are also known endocrine disruptors, affecting the estrogen receptor, for example, and playing a role in the development of breast cancer, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. The effects of these chemicals are most concerning at key developmental stages: during pregnancy, infancy, and adolescence.

During this year’s European Week Against Cancer, we recommend:

🔵 Cancer prevention needs to be a true priority for the EU and across all policy and legislative sectors.

🔵 The legislative provisions that keep carcinogens— including those that act via the disruption of hormone systems—out of our cosmetics and personal care products should not be lifted.

🔵 Protection against EDCs needs to be improved by extending the current rules for the use of carcinogens in cosmetics to chemicals which are classified as endocrine disruptors.

Today might mark the final negotiation on the revised EU Toys Safety law—a crucial opportunity to prioritise children's health by protecting them from harmful chemicals.

To ensure the highest level of protection, the regulation must include the following:
🟠 A ban on PFAS - the hashtag
🟠 A ban on the hashtag group of chemicals, to reduce children's exposure to these endocrine disruptors

There can be no justification for continuing to use these harmful chemicals in toys when their effects have been known for decades. Children and families deserve full protection with no further delay.

At EDC-Free Europe, we are urging the European Commission to propose non-renewal of endocrine disrupting pesticides fenoxaprop-P-ethyl and fludioxonil. These pesticides have been recently defined as substances with endocrine-disrupting properties by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The consequences of endocrine disruption include:
⚠️ delayed sexual maturation
⚠️ decreased anogenital distance in males
⚠️ increased oestrus cycle in females

These substances, initially approved until 2018 and later extended until 2025, pose a serious public health risk. Keeping these substances on the market, with the new evidence on their endocrine disrupting properties, directly contradicts the objective of Regulation 1107/2009, concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market, to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment, in line with the precautionary principle.
