Last night at the Illawarra Local Business Awards, I didn’t take home the win but I’m walking away with something just as valuable: gratitude.

Being recognised as a finalist alongside so many incredible local businesses is an achievement I’m truly proud of. Running a small business isn’t always easy, but every challenge, every client, and every milestone has helped shape the business I love today.

To everyone who voted for me, supported me, trusted me with your hair, and cheered me on throughout this journey thank you. Your support means more than any award ever could.

Since moving the salon home….
I’ve set so many boundaries 🤍

We need to talk about something the hair industry taught me that simply isn’t true.
For years we were told
“the client is always right.”
But the longer I stay in this industry, the more i realize...
that statement has caused more burnout, resentment, and disrespect toward stylists than almost anything else.
Because the unfiltered truth is...
The client is NOT always right.
Sometimes clients complain about things that have nothing to do with the service.
Sometimes they push the policies.
Sometimes they question my pricing.
Sometimes they try to manipulate situations to get services for free.
And if I don’t have systems, boundaries, and policies in place, i will constantly feel like I am defending myself in my own chair.
But here’s the shift that happens when i become mature in this industry:
I stop operating like someone who is just doing hair...
and I start operating like the professional that I am..
Doctors have policies.
Lawyers have policies.
Every respected profession has systems that protect their time, their expertise, and their energy.

Hairstylists should too.
It is okay to say no.
It is okay to stand by your policies.
It is okay to refuse services that are not in the best interest of the client’s hair.
It is okay to deny refunds when your work was done correctly.
My chair is your business.
And the moment I begin operating like the professional I am…
clients will respect me differently. 🙌

My happy days in the salon multiplied when I stopped rebooking and blocking the people who made my days hell.

Negative energy, rude behaviour and the mini
‘complaints’ that I could never solve because the problem wasn’t you…. it was actually just how unhappy they were in themselves.

So I think we need to let go of that client(s) that make you feel like this and I reckon suddenly you’ll remember why you love hairdressing so much. If you do that and you still don’t love it? Then yeah, probably time for a career change my burnout babe! And yes that one client does make you feel like giving up your entire worth.
