…and how to actually bring these conversations into your skin consultations while staying within your scope.

No pretending one superfood is going to cure somebody’s acne. 😂

Just practical education that helps you understand the WHY behind what we see in the treatment room.

🚨 **SKIN CONDITION DEEP DIVE: RINGWORM** 🚨

And despite the name… **there are absolutely no worms involved** 😂

Ringworm, also known as **tinea corporis**, is a contagious **fungal skin infection** — and as skin professionals, recognising when something may be fungal is pretty important before we start throwing treatments and actives at it.

🔍 **3 KEY FEATURES TO LOOK FOR:**

1️⃣ **Ring-shaped patches**
Often circular or oval with a more defined, raised or scaly border and clearer-looking skin through the centre.

2️⃣ **Itchy, red + scaly skin**
The area can feel itchy, irritated, dry or flaky and may gradually become larger over time.

3️⃣ **It can spread**
Ringworm can spread to other areas of the body and between people through direct skin contact or contaminated items like towels, clothing, bedding and gym equipment.

💊 **SO HOW IS IT TREATED?**

For uncomplicated ringworm on the body, treatment usually involves an **antifungal medication**, commonly a topical antifungal cream from a pharmacist or prescribed by a doctor.

As skin therapists, this is NOT something we want to aggressively exfoliate, peel, needle or treat as dermatitis or “dry skin”. 🚫

If it is widespread, recurring, affecting the **scalp or nails**, or isn’t improving with appropriate treatment, it’s time to refer the client to their **GP or pharmacist** for further assessment and management.

✨ **SKIN PRO TIP:**
Not every red, flaky patch needs another active ingredient.

Sometimes being an incredible skin professional means recognising what is **outside our scope**, knowing when to stop treatment and making the right referral.

Can we talk about that little feeling of dread that sometimes creeps in when it’s time to discuss homecare with a client?

You know their skin needs support outside the clinic… but you’re worried they’ll think you’re trying to sell them a whole shelf of products.

So you hesitate. You soften the recommendation. Or you give them so many options that they leave feeling completely overwhelmed.

But starting someone on homecare does not need to mean handing them a 10-step routine.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is prescribe three core products that are simple, targeted and actually connected to their skin goals.

A routine they understand.

A routine they can afford to maintain.

And most importantly, a routine they will actually use.

Because the best prescription isn’t the biggest one — it’s the one your client can stay consistent with long enough to see their skin begin to change.

You can always build from there as their skin improves, their trust grows and they’re ready for the next step.

Keep it simple. Make it intentional. Give every product a clear purpose.

That isn’t being salesy.

That is doing your job as a skin professional. 🤍

What are your three core products when starting a new client on homecare?

🧠 The answer is... Orbital (Ocular) Cellulitis 👀
This one is more than just a swollen eye. Orbital cellulitis is a serious bacterial infection that develops behind the eye and is a medical emergency. It most commonly starts from a sinus infection and needs urgent treatment.
🔍 3 Things to Look For
• A hot, red, swollen eyelid.
• Pain when moving the eye.
• Bulging of the eye or changes to vision.
💉 Treatment
➡️ Immediate hospital referral.
➡️ IV antibiotics.
➡️ Surgery if an abscess has formed.
💡 Skin Freak Tip: The biggest clue this isn’t “just cellulitis” is painful eye movements or vision changes. Those are your red flags that the infection has spread behind the eye and needs urgent medical care.
