When you’re wearing a black salon cape, your hair is surrounded by a very dark background. This makes blonde look brighter and brunette look richer because the contrast makes the colour pop.

Once the cape comes off, your hair is sitting against your skin tone, clothing, and surroundings instead. Your skin is usually much lighter than a black cape, so your hair can suddenly look:

* Slightly darker than it did in the chair.
* Warmer or cooler depending on your skin’s undertones.
* Less “icy” or “bright” because the contrast has changed.
