From infancy through to adulthood, a gentle touch or a heartfelt hug has an immediate, measurable effect on calming the nervous system. Holding onto a safe, mutual embrace for just a few seconds allows us to feel truly seen, received, and grounded in the comfort of another human being.

As we grow older, it becomes increasingly vital to seek out and receive healthy, tactile touch, as a lack of physical connection can lead to profound loneliness. Recognising the safety of your own body and exchanging warmth with those you care about is essential for long-term health.

Adolescence is a long road, and often, mothers are navigating their own perimenopausal shifts at the same time. When both mother and daughter operate at low capacity, everyday moments can quickly feel like a war zone.

We’re exploring how to release the reins of authoritarian control and step into the role of a supportive, grounded guide. Join us as we explore the Mother-Daughter shift in this episode.

We frequently assume the nesting instinct belongs exclusively to pregnancy and the preparation of a nursery. However, this deep biological impulse belongs to all women and regularly resurfaces during transitional chapters and the arrival of the colder autumn and winter seasons.

As the weather turns brisk and bracing, it is entirely natural to feel a powerful urge to pull inward, prepare warmer foods, and make your home more comfortable. Embracing this seasonal desire to nestle inside allows you to fully celebrate the physical warmth of your sanctuary.

So many women are caught in the exhausting cycle of pushing themselves until they completely drop, operating under the false belief that rest is a reward you have to earn by checking off an endless to-do list. Whether you are navigating the intense demands of raising young children, managing a household, or balancing a career, you do not need to win a medal just to take a break.

True self-care means learning to listen to your body and responding to the need for rest exactly as it arises. You don’t need to wait until everything is perfectly finished to permit yourself to stop. The moment you feel overwhelmed, catch yourself and claim just five or ten minutes to simply sit down and breathe. Listen to your own internal cues rather than your task list because only you know when you truly need to recharge, and you are fully allowed to take it.

Autumn is the perfect time to review what’s working and what isn’t, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

Building a sense of sanctuary doesn't require a quiet room or a perfect environment it simply requires your breath. When you need to push away external noise and create immediate internal space, the most powerful invitation to come back to yourself is placing one hand on your heart and the other on your belly.

Your belly acts as your second brain, and feeling it rise and fall beneath your palm brings instant comfort. Meanwhile, your heart serves as your centre for giving and receiving love. By closing your eyes and taking just two or three simple breaths into these spaces, you initiate a soothing warmth and movement within. It doesn't need to be fancy or special; just feeling your own nurturing touch is enough to anchor your nervous system and return you home to your body.

Parenting an adolescent from ages 11 to 17 is a long, changing phase filled with unpredictable shifts and unexpected challenges. When your teenager’s emotional overwhelm collides with your own ongoing life shifts, such as perimenopause or menopause, it can feel like a double-layered, daily collision in your home.

In this episode of the Healing Practice podcast, we explore how to offer meaningful somatic support for your teen without completely overwhelming your own nervous system. We discuss why trying to tightly control a growing adolescent's behaviour rarely works, and look at how to walk side-by-side as a calm, grounded guide using the philosophy of life calling life.

We dive into the somatic tools and nervous system education needed for this stage, including:

The Nervous System Collision: Understanding why a teenager’s perceived arrogance or snappiness is more an indicator of an overwhelmed and low-capacity nervous system.

Inviting Permission over Restrictive Control: Navigating safety, phone tracking, and social gatherings by asking for their permission and respecting their burgeoning autonomy.

The Adolescent "Toddler" Volcanic Eruption: Recognising why teenagers erupt when they feel no one is reading the room or giving them the space to articulate themselves.

Reflection Points

Are you attempting to restrict your teenager's behaviour out of genuine safety guidance, or out of a personal desire to maintain strict control?

How can you use your own life experiences to validate your teen's transition rather than viewing their emotional outbursts as a personal attack?

What light, humorous ways can you introduce vagus nerve regulation (like humming or breathwork) into your household routine?

Bonus Somatic Handout

Download our simple guide on how practices like vocal humming and vibration can stimulate your teen's vagus nerve, soothe their throat, and restore calm during tense moments.

Warmth is the ultimate foundation for regulation because your body cannot focus on healing, moving, or thriving if it is actively fighting off a chill. When you are cold, your nervous system naturally tightens up, holding onto layers as a physical shield against the environment.

As the women at the gym beautifully illustrated, we instinctively resist shedding our protective layers until we have built up enough internal heat. You have to be fully warmed up to feel safe, comfortable, and truly ready to tackle whatever activity comes next. Honouring that need by layering up and giving yourself time to adjust isn't just about comfort; it's about listening to your body's wisdom and staying regulated from the inside out.
