“What do I do with my hands?”
Possibly the most common question in a portrait studio.
The answer is: I’ll tell you.
Hands can make a portrait feel confident and relaxed — or suddenly make someone look uncomfortable.
Rather than giving everyone the same pose, I’ll use small movements: a hand in a pocket, adjusting a cuff or jacket, resting an arm, leaning slightly, holding glasses, or simply letting the hands fall naturally.
And sometimes the best solution for a headshot is not to have the hands in the frame at all.
You don’t need a list of poses.
You need direction that feels natural for you.

A good headshot shouldn’t feel like you’ve been told to “stand there and smile.”

Small movements, relaxed shoulders and a genuine expression can make such a difference.

And sometimes, the best photograph happens in between the poses.

That’s why I keep my clients moving and talking throughout a session.

The camera is there but I don’t want you thinking about it the whole time.
