Heads up, it's swooping season! 🐦
It’s that time of year again! From August to October, some birds (especially magpies) become protective and may swoop to defend their nests.
Here are some suggestions to stay safe:
Give yourself a buffer of 150m from magpie nests to avoid swooping.
If you must go near a nest of a swooping bird:
ℹ️ Don’t swat or fight back.
ℹ️ Don’t provoke or deliberately harass birds.
ℹ️ Keep an eye on magpies you see around you.
ℹ️ Respect warning signs and.
ℹ️ Avoid approaching breeding areas.
Protect yourself by:
ℹ️ Wearing a hat and sunglasses.
ℹ️ Use an umbrella while in the area.
ℹ️ Cyclists should dismount and walk.
ℹ️ If able, travel together, birds are less likely to swoop when you’re not alone.
