PSA: the products your teen is seeing on TikTok might be good for adult skin, but they’re not for their skin!

We’re here to explain the differences between in the ages, so you can you’re your child understand why they might need different ingredients and formulas to keep their skin balanced.

Younger skin is so resilient (it bounces back easily from spots, dryness, scars etc), but is still developing, so it’s prone to inflammation. Their skin might be more reactive than mature skin, but the reactions also go away faster.

Their collagen and elastin levels are at max, and cell turnover is at its best, so they should focus on formulas that hydrate, protect, and support a healthy skin barrier.

For adults in their mid-20s and beyond, their skin is still resilient, but ageing subtly begins. That means that those collagen and elastin levels start to drop, and fine lines, dullness, and loss of elasticity starts.

What is sensitized skin? We know that this can get confused with sensitive skin, which can react similarly, but it’s not the same. Sensitized skin can be triggered by all sorts of reasons that damage or compromise the skin barrier and/or microbiome.

Signs of sensitized skin include:

Stinging or burning – especially when applying products that they’ve always used, but new products too

Redness + inflammation – that "flushed" look that doesn't go away quickly, and can feel a bit sore to the touch

Tightness + dehydration – their skin doesn’t hold onto moisture like it used to, it feels very dry and almost stripped of moisture or its usual glow

Flakiness + random dry spots – even when they use their usual moisturiser or extra hydration
