Gel / Acrylic / Spa Pedicure

24/09/2026

Running a business sometimes teaches you important lessons unexpectedly.

Recently, we offered a free model appointment to assess a new nail technician. The model arrived with her 5-month-old baby.

I explained the appointment would take 1.5–2 hours and she wouldn’t be able to use her hands. She said her baby would be happy in the pram, so we proceeded.

I understand how hard it can be for mothers to make time for themselves, and I didn’t want to take that opportunity away.

Everything went smoothly until her baby became unsettled during the gel stage. Of course, I couldn’t tell a mother not to pick up her baby.

She had to comfort her baby with gel on her nails and nail dust and debris on her hands. While settling a baby, it’s difficult to consider every risk — touching a toy the baby may put in their mouth, or gel getting on their clothing.

That was when I regretted my original decision.

Not because the baby became unsettled — the baby had been incredibly good — but because a nail salon with dust, chemicals and sharp tools isn’t an appropriate environment to continue a service while holding a baby.

With over an hour remaining, I decided we couldn’t safely continue.

I knew this situation was possible, yet I prioritised not making someone uncomfortable and convinced myself it was “kindness.” Honestly, I was also afraid of negative feedback. Kids policies are sensitive, and I hesitated to make the firm decision I should have made.

By trying to be kind, I created a risk that could have been avoided.

Policies can seem cold from the outside. But sometimes they exist because we have a responsibility to anticipate risks and keep people safe.

Afterwards, this experience was anonymously shared on social media in a way that, from my perspective, didn’t accurately reflect what happened.

This was never about a baby crying.

It was about risk, safety and responsibility.

From the outside, a policy may look like a restriction. From our side, it means taking responsibility.

As a salon owner, sometimes we must choose between being liked by everyone and being responsible for everyone.

We have to choose the latter.

Always learning. 🤍
