Spending all evening after a long salon day, editing reels for your Instagram, fills most hairdressers with dread. I was exactly the same at the beginning of the year.

I spent insane hours studying how to edit and what holds attention, and I’m still learning. But what I do know, I want to share!

I read today that education content is done on here, but I disagree. If I’d found an account that housed everything I needed to know all in one place, it would have saved me HOURS on research.

Some hair accounts with large followings do well without all these things, but if you don’t have a large following yet then adding overlays, text, various shots and captions on your reels will keep the viewer watching longer, and your content will get pushed out to more people…and your dream clients will finally get to see you.

Any questions? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to make editing easier for you 💋

The confidence on some fellas is pretty outstanding 😂 Most of the beautiful and wonderful women I know do not have this level of confidence, and I am often guilty of many moments of ‘not sure I can get away with wearing this’ or ‘oh no I can’t say that!’.

So what the bloody hell are we doing about it?! I’ve learnt over the last six months that confidence comes whilst DOING the thing, rather than after the thing. I’m still learning.

Did I match with the guy who sent this? No. No I did not. Not too sure about his choice of words but I supposeeee I can see where he’s going with it 😂

If you’re off out tonight, go have a ball just as you are (and I will try and do the same) 💋

Walking into the salon knowing you’ve got to ‘switch on’ when you’re feeling like a bag of crap in your mind is overwhelming.

Sometimes it feels impossible yet you don’t want to cancel a day of bookings because the anxiety about having to reschedule everyone is a nightmare.

But this industry is HARD and we have to look after ourselves, both physically and mentally, because your wellbeing always comes first.

I didn’t even realise it was RU OK? day in Australia until I opened up Instagram this afternoon. I’ve been absent on social media over the last two weeks as I’ve been struggling with anxiety myself and although outwardly I was functioning just fine to the world, I’ve spent lots of time between salon days and a trip away to NZ in a bit of a scared world.

Today I decided to put on my red lippy, film a tutorial and speak up because I know that hairdressers are often people pleasers who listen to everyone else’s problems before speaking about their own and I want us to stick together.

If you’re feeling like I was then this is what I’ve been doing:

• Went to my therapist and got some stuff out that I’ve been letting pile on top of me.
• I went to reformer Pilates to give my brain to body connection time. I couldn’t face the gym but this felt safe to me as it’s a small class.
• Spoke to friends and family and spent time with my sister and niece and nephews; my nephew Toby read me a children’s book at one point which was actually so lovely.
• Took Hamish on some beach walks; my feet in the ocean worked wonders.

By no means do I have struggles anywhere near as big as many others, and if you are struggling then please reach out for help.

I tried to record myself saying this earlier but I don’t think anyone wants to see me blubbering on camera so I’ve gone back to doing what I love doing most and that’s telling you a story while I do my hair.

And this one is a lovely one because it was around this time 11 years ago that this happened.

I was still a junior at one of the first salons I worked at and Joanne came in every week. She was full of life and a right character and I loved her.

I remember she always used to hold my arm at the end of the appointment and say something lovely, and I can still remember the way her hands felt. But the last time I ever saw her she said many wonderful things to me and I knew then that when I opened my own salon I wanted a book full of Joanne’s because to go to ‘work’ and have people sit in your chair that you connect with is the ultimate dream for me.

I went to her funeral, even though it was far too soon after my Dads funeral, but I had to be there because she’d just been so lovely to me. She was so patient with me even when I took WAAAAY too long to blowdry her hair because I was still learning how to do the perfect bouncy blow with pin curls. Even when she was in pain, she was still patient with me, and she always wanted to look her best. I chose this pin curl and bouncy blow video as that’s how she had her hair.

Her husband would come and pick her up after the appointment and he always told her she looked lovely. Every single week.

So here’s to Joanne. And here’s to every client that makes you feel this way. And here’s to all the hairdressers that you have that special bond with. ❤️
