Somewhere between the first push of the pedals and the first breath of sea air, the stories start coming out.

The dance hall where he met his wife. The street she grew up on. The boat that used to sit on the Broadwater. Our pilots hear stories like these every week, and honestly, it's our favourite part of the ride.

October is Mental Health Month, and Queensland Mental Health Week starts today with the theme Build Community, Build Wellbeing. That one sits close to our hearts. The older people we ride with already know what the research keeps telling us: feeling like you belong somewhere is good for your mind.

And belonging rarely starts with something big. It's someone remembering your name. Saving you the front seat. Laughing at the same old joke for the fifth time like it's the first.

This week, think of one older person in your life. A parent, a neighbour, the man at the bus stop you always nod to. Give them a call. Pop over with a cuppa. Or book them a free ride along the water and come along for it. ๐Ÿ’š

Every ride is free, at Paradise Point and The Spit. Links in the comments.

Summer's arriving on the Gold Coast, and there's no finer way to feel it than from up here.

The water goes on forever, the light softens everything, and the whole coast seems to breathe a little slower. This is the world we get to share every week, with people who thought their mornings by the sea were behind them.

No matter your age, whatever your body can do, and whatever you're carrying that no one else can see, there's a seat in the sun with your name on it. Every ride is free, at Paradise Point and The Spit.

Aerial footage by The Drone for Good, a beautiful new volunteer drone project lending skies like these to local causes. Follow along at , or get in touch at [email protected]. Thank you, Luiz, for helping us share it.

Before anyone feels the wind, a volunteer has already charged the battery.

Then the small jobs begin. A red cover gets tucked over two sets of knees. A wheelchair rolls up the ramp and is strapped in snug. Two passengers get help finding a spot for their handbags. When the rain comes, someone holds an umbrella over a passenger until he's ready to go. And once everyone is settled, the rider gives a wave and pedals off along the Broadwater.

That's what our volunteers make possible every ride day. 2026 is the International Year of Volunteers, so this one's for everyone who pedals, lifts, tucks in a blanket or simply turns up. Thank you. ๐Ÿ’›

Cycling Without Age removes barriers.
Most often, those barriers aren't the most obvious ones.

This is Jim. He's 105. Last week our team at The Spit took him out along the water, and he loved every minute of it. He talked the whole way, telling story after story, with more he still wanted to tell.

The same week, one of our guests who walks with a stick told a volunteer what his days are like. He's always looking down, watching his feet, making sure he doesn't fall. He couldn't remember the last time he'd looked up.

Then we helped him onto the trishaw. For once, the ground was not his to worry about. So he lifted his head. The water, the trees, the sky moving past him. For the first time in a long while, he got to look around.

Looking up is such an ordinary thing that it's easy to forget a person can lose it, that the sky and the water and the trees can slip out of reach. A free roll along the Broadwater sounds like a small thing. But for some of our guests, it's the first time in months their eyes have come off the pavement.

Gold Coast Benji has been fitted for his very own Cycling Without Age Gold Coast uniform, and he's earned his spot for a big trip. This October he's heading to Canberra with our Wayne Sticher for Wayne's Churchill Fellowship induction on the 15th and 16th.
Benji will be right alongside him, and word is he's hoping to squeeze in a bike ride around the city while he's there.

Wayne's Fellowship will take him overseas in 2027 to learn from cycling and community programs around the world, all so we can keep sharing the right to wind in your hair with more people here on the Gold Coast.

Congratulations Wayne. We couldn't be prouder to have you (and Benji) representing us.

Huge thanks to Winston Churchill Trust - AU for the opportunity.

What a cracker of a day! ๐ŸŒญ

On Saturday our Cycling Without Age Gold Coast crew set up shop at Harvey Norman for a sausage sizzle fundraiser, and the team absolutely did us proud.

By 9.30 the tent was up, the flag was flying and the bbq was fired up. Bert and David worked the grill like pros, turning out 150 snags and 5kg of onions cooked to perfection. We knew they nailed it because customers kept coming back for seconds. Cathy ran the till and somehow pulled off a drive thru service, Jill kept the drinks cold and the bin chooks at bay (while doubling as our DJ), Cath kept the serving line moving, and Everlyn had the bread and napkins sorted the whole way through.

By 1.30 we were completely sold out and packed up, then off we went for a well earned cold one.

All up we raised $663.50, including $55.55 from generous folks who just wanted to chip in and support the cause. A huge thank you to Bert, David, Cathy, Jill, Cath and Everlyn, and to Volunteering Gold Coast, Harvey Norman, plus Runaway Bay Coles, Woolworths and ALDI Australia for getting behind us.

And it wasn't just their time our volunteers gave. Jeff covered the onions, Jill brought all the ice and the esky, Penny supplied a box of aprons, and Cathy took care of the drinks. That kind of generosity is what makes it all come together.

Days like this only happen because of volunteers who give up their Saturday and throw themselves into it. It's their energy that keeps us rolling, and with support like this we can keep doing what we love: bringing people together, out in the sunshine, sharing a smile and a story. A special thank you to Katrina, who not only pitched in on the day but wrote up the whole report for us afterwards.

Now the real question... should we bring the trishaw along next time and do laps of the car park for a gold coin donation? ๐Ÿ˜ It would be a great sight to see.
