A review just published in npj Cardiovascular Health confirms what we see clinically all the time: women have lower blood pressure than men during their reproductive years, largely thanks to oestrogen and progesterone's protective effects on blood vessel health.

But as we move through perimenopause and menopause, that protection fades. Declining oestrogen means less blood vessel relaxation, changes in endothelial function, and a gradual rise in blood pressure — contributing to significantly higher cardiovascular risk in women over 50.

The research also highlights that chronic stress, poor diet, physical inactivity, and environmental toxins may affect women's blood pressure more than men's — partly because women tend to have smaller blood vessels and distribute body fat differently.
