THE OTHER FROWN

We often focus on the frown between the brows, but the lower face has its own “sad face” pattern that is frequently overlooked.

When the depressor anguli oris muscles contract, they pull the corners of the mouth downwards. At the same time, the mentalis elevates the lower lip and bunches the skin over the chin, creating a pout.

Over time, repetitive folding, together with age-related changes in collagen and elasticity, can cause lines to become etched into the skin and remain visible even when the muscles are relaxed. The skin itself can also be treated separately to help create a smoother overall appearance.

ASYMMETRY—OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Uneven-looking lips are not always caused by differences in shape or volume. Sometimes, what appears to be asymmetry is actually a pigment issue.

As this image shows, there is a break in the visible border of the upper lip on one side. This makes that side appear flatter and less defined, even though the underlying lip structure may be relatively even.

Where pigment is the concern, cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation or careful overlining may be more appropriate options.

Years of clinical experience, anatomical knowledge and careful assessment all come into play. We assess the lip’s structure, movement, volume and pigment to understand what is actually creating the imbalance.
