The Body Scan — noticing before reacting

Our body is constantly communicating with us.

We often think of the physical body as separate from our emotions, mind and soul — but each layer reflects the others. Nothing is separate.

Tension in the jaw.
Shoulders creeping towards the ears.
A tight chest.
A clenched stomach.
Hands gripping without us even noticing.

These can be some of the first signs that our nervous system has been triggered.

The Body Scan is a simple practice I use to bring awareness back into the body. By learning to recognise what we are holding physically, we can begin to notice when we are becoming activated before we reach the point of feeling completely dysregulated.

You can do this standing, seated or lying down.

Begin at the top of your head and slowly move your awareness down through your body.

Notice where you are holding tension — without trying to judge or analyse it.

When you find an area of tension, pause.

Breathe into it.

Allow it to soften and release as much as it is ready to.

Then continue your scan, slowly moving down through the body until you reach your feet.

That’s it. You’ve completed the practice.

The more often we bring awareness into our body, the more familiar we become with its signals.

And sometimes, simply noticing is enough to interrupt an old pattern.

Body. Mind. Emotion. Soul.
Nothing is separate.

✨ Introducing Gentle Scar Therapy at Hand to Heal ✨

My decision to train in Gentle Scar Therapy came from a very personal place.

Earlier this year, I underwent Mohs surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from my forehead, followed by a skin graft.

Although the surgery removed the cancer, I wasn’t prepared for how disconnected I would feel from that part of my body afterwards.

For a while, I wanted to hide away. I experienced persistent headaches on that side of my head, along with neck pain, and the area around my scar simply didn’t feel like it was part of me.

Even now, I’m reminded that scars can carry more than a physical story. Recently someone was asking me about my scar while staring at it, and I suddenly felt that discomfort and self-consciousness all over again.

That lived experience is a big part of why I chose to complete my Gentle Scar Therapy training.

Scars aren’t always just something we see on the surface. Scar tissue can affect the way the surrounding tissues move and glide and, depending on the location and nature of the scar, may contribute to restriction or changes in movement and function.

Through gentle scar therapy, my intention is to help people reconnect with an area that may feel different, restricted or no longer quite like part of them — to help integrate the scar back into the body and support comfort, mobility and function.

I’ve already had the privilege of working with clients whose scars are decades old and seeing improvements in movement and function in muscles and joints affected by scar tissue.

And now I also understand the experience from the other side of the treatment table.

The photos I’m sharing show the progression of my own scar following Mohs surgery and skin grafting. It’s been quite a journey — physically and emotionally — and one that has added another layer to the way I work with the body.

Gentle Scar Therapy treatments are now available at Hand to Heal.

If you have a scar — new or old — that feels tight, restricted, uncomfortable or disconnected, you can book a Gentle Scar Therapy treatment via my booking link in bio.

Your scar is part of your story, but it doesn’t have to feel separate from you. 💜

Bali reminded me just how important it is to step away from the everyday sometimes.

To slow down.
To reset.
To restore.
To simply be.

What I noticed most while I was away was how present I felt. I wasn’t constantly thinking about what needed to be done next or rushing from one thing to another. I was able to really be in each moment — in the conversations, the surroundings, the laughter, the stillness and the experiences.

I feel like that is my biggest takeaway.

I don’t need to be in Bali to feel that way.

The invitation now is to bring that same mindful presence into my everyday life. More so than ever before. To notice when I’m rushing. To create space between the doing. To be fully where I am, with whoever I’m with, rather than always moving mentally towards what comes next.

Taking time away can reset and restore us, but maybe the real gift is what we choose to bring home.

For me, it’s a reminder to be here.

In this moment.

Because this is where life is actually happening. 💜
