Our soon to be released limited edition Tasmanian Perfume uses three main techniques of extraction for creating the scent.
We use varied extraction methods because each has its own specific advantages.
We choose the methods based on the type of fragrance we wish to encapsulate & the characteristics of the raw biomass used.
One such method is Maceration.
During the Maceration process, the biomass (flowers, leaves, bark, wood etc.) is soaked in a solvent, we use organic alcohol to extract the aromatic compounds.
Organic alcohol is very low in odour, so it does not change the essence of our biomass.
The biomass is left to rest/steep in the alcohol so the oils can develop and harmonise together, and to soften the sharp alcohol notes.
Once it’s had enough time to develop, the alcohol is strained of the biomass, then fresh biomass is added to continue diffusing.
Each process takes many weeks and is repeated many times over until the desired scent strength is achieved.
The end result is a botanical tincture that can then be used within our perfume blends.
With this technique so far we have used pine, pine bark, wattle bark, mimosa wattle flowers, various daffodils, small formosa acacia, white golden diosma, lemon Monterey cypress, plus our kitchen sage & pineapple sage.
We have also used a Tasmanian wh**ky & coffee that contains our sage which is burnt & macerated in the wh**ky, this will give our scent an earthy, bush vibe.
Once we have finished with the biomass, it is composted into our beautiful garden so there is no waste.
There is a lot of work in making this type of perfume, after we have all of the oils we require, we will need to tweak the mother scent.
It is then left in a dark, cool place, we check it monthly & ensure that the scent is going along in the way we want it to smell.
We do have a name for it, but, won’t be releasing that until we are closer to the release date.
At this stage, we may only be able to produce 50-60 bottles, so a super exclusive release.

5 common bathroom habits you never knew may be ruining your skincare!
Have you ever wondered about your bathroom habits & how they could be impacting your skincare?
Storage
The way you store your skincare products has a dramatic effect on how well they perform for your skin. What you may not realise is that your bathroom is not the most ideal place to store your skincare products.
Chemical reactions are constantly taking place in skincare. Products stored in high temperatures, high humidity, or in the light or on the vanity, can degrade quickly due to damage caused to the active ingredients in them.
Light from the sun & artificial light can reduce the strength of the functional ingredients. Steam can creep in from your bath or shower if lids are not on or tightened properly.
Remember to store your organic products in the fridge or a dark, cool cupboard & never over 21oC. Optimum for Malano products is 4-15oC. Always make sure you screw the lids on firmly, but not over tight.
Hand Washing
It can be easy to forget to wash your hands before touching your skincare products, but it is an essential step before you begin your routine.
Your hands pick up & distribute all types of microbes when you touch things. Using unwashed fingers/hands will contaminate your products & can cause breakouts, skin infections & irritation.
Washing your hands & drying them thoroughly before & during applying skincare is a must to help prevent cross contamination & potential microbe build up in your products.
Adding Water to Products
Water contains a vast array of harmful microbes (like bacterium) that affect your skincare products. If introduced to your skincare, these microbes reduce the quality & effectiveness of products. They can also cause infections, breakouts & skin irritation.
To help prevent this, always make sure you dry your hands thoroughly after washing & if you need to use water, only use a good quality distilled water.

To all of you who are new here with us, first of all Welcome! We are so glad that you found us!
We thought that we would do a post to introduce (or re-introduce) ourselves and what we’re about.
We are Malano, a modern boutique Wellness, Beauty & Fragrance Family Business, born and raised in bush lands in Southern Tasmania.
Through a holistic approach, we proudly hand make premium organic products, designed to elevate and complement modern lifestyles, enhancing the quality of your skin, body, health & wellbeing, inspiring your spaces with our home fragrances, and creating immersive sensory experiences through our handmade, boutique perfumes.
Our products not only smell and feel amazing, but are good for your body, home, business and the environment.
Let us quickly take you back a few years to where is all began.
In the beginning we set out to make candles that not only smelt amazing cold or hot, but also had a great melt pool and didn’t soot every time they were lit.
Our candles are still one of our biggest selling products to this day!
But early on in our journey, we were met with a huge challenge.
Maryka has suffered a severe spinal injury requiring years of rehab and medication that came with her recovery, which left her feeling toxic, foggy and far from herself.
That experience became the spark; what if we created products that supported the body instead of working against it?
We were not interested in cutting corners, we wanted to create premium products built on our values.
We spent months sourcing ingredients from suppliers who were certified organic, cruelty free, fair trade, and sustainable, because what goes into our products matters as much as what they do for you.
So alongside the candles and oils we already made, we set out to build a skincare range that was organic, free from nasty chemicals, and genuinely good for you and the environment.
Out of all of the research, our Signature Range was born.
We officially launched in July 2019 at Salamanca Market, and for seven years since, we continue to keep refining our craft, testing, tweaking, and pouring care into every product we make.
Over the years, we have also developed a large range of artisanal perfumes.
We are one of a handful of Boutique Artisanal Perfumeries in Tasmania designing unique, sophisticated and memorable scents that are gentle on the body, feel good and wholesome, and assist our customers to foster more meaningful, enriching and immersive sensory experiences.
Our perfumes also offer a sense of deeper connection to oneself, individuality, and exclusivity.
To this day, our mission has not changed: to create superior, nature powered products, made with the best ingredients and thoughtful technology, because feeling like your best, most natural self should not be complicated.
