🚨“𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗚𝗘𝗟 𝗡𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗦 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗘!?”🚨

Let’s set the record straight: 𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨. What we’re really seeing is reporters sensationalizing and spreading misinformation.

The truth?

One ingredient — 𝗧𝗣𝗢 (𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝘆𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗼𝘆𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗢𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲) was added to the EU’s restricted list. Most professional brands saw this coming and reformulated long before the deadline. But the ban itself is controversial, and here’s why:

The study behind it wasn’t done in realistic salon conditions. Instead, male rats were fed very high doses of TPO 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟵𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, and researchers noted negative effects on s***m.

That’s oral ingestion at 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 levels — nothing like the tiny, topical amounts used in cured gel manicures.

By comparison, your actual exposure is 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟬.𝟬𝟭 𝗺𝗴 1-2x 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 — an amount that’s already been reviewed in multiple studies and deemed safe.

Over 90 days, that looks like this:

• 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: ~0.03-0.06 mg
• 𝗥𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: 450 mg
• 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 (when scaled to rats weight): ~126,000 mg (126 grams)

Unless you’re literally 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟱𝟬 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵, you don’t need to panic.

And if you are, please seek help, for many things. 😅

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗣𝗢? 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲?

TPO is a 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 — its job is to react to UV/LED light and kickstart the polymerization process that hardens your gel, giving you a durable, clear, long-lasting finish. It’s been popular because it cures gels quickly and resists yellowing. It’s also used in dental curing, inks, and 3D printing.

And yes, 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 before:

• In 2014, the EU’s own Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) concluded that TPO was safe in professional-use gels at concentrations up to 5%, since exposure is extremely low and it’s applied to the nail plate, not skin.

• Human patch tests found no irritation or sensitization.

• Studies on cured nails show that once hardened, less than 0.2% of TPO can even be extracted — meaning almost none is left free to be absorbed. And even if that trace amount were absorbed, studies have shown it’s still safe for the body at those levels.

• In the U.S., the FDA continues to allow TPO in nail products because there’s no evidence of harm when used properly. While the EU relies on hazard-only classifications, the U.S. uses risk-based assessments — looking at how products are actually applied and what exposure really looks like.

In other words, this isn’t a brand-new ingredient suddenly being questioned. TPO has a long record of safe professional use when applied and cured properly.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴

Doug Schoon (Doug Schoon's Brain) — a respected chemist, author, educator, and 𝗰𝗼-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 — has been one of the most vocal experts against this ruling. In his open letter to the European Commission, he points out that:

• These findings come exclusively from rat ingestion studies, not human or topical nail use.

• In nail products, TPO is used at about 1–3% and becomes locked into the cured gel, meaning it is “immobilized within the polymer network and not systemically bioavailable.”

• A hazard-only approach ignores real exposure — making this ban scientifically unjustified.

Doug also highlighted how other common substances — like alcohol, caffeine, and even soft drinks — have shown s***m reduction in rats when fed at massive daily doses. Almost anything is bad for you in those kinds of doses. That’s why it’s so important to look at realistic studies that actually replicate a salon environment.

He urges nail techs and brands to speak up, noting: “It’s your industry to save or to lose. Stand up and make your voices heard.
