Let's talk PIGMENT

If you have it you know this is very difficult to treat.

Why pigment is so stubborn?

* Different types of pigment behave differently.
Melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), solar lentigines, freckles and medication-related pigmentation all have different mechanisms and respond differently to treatment.

* Pigment can sit at different depths.
Melanin may be predominantly epidermal, dermal, or mixed. Epidermal pigment generally responds more readily to topical treatments and controlled resurfacing, whereas dermal pigment can be much harder to clear.

* Melanocytes can remain highly active.
Even after existing pigment is reduced, melanocytes can continue producing melanin when stimulated by UV, visible light, inflammation, hormones or skin injury.

* Inflammation can make it worse.
This is particularly important with aggressive treatments. Excessive heat, laser energy, peels or irritation can trigger inflammation → melanocyte stimulation → more PIH.

* UV and visible light continually stimulate pigmentation.

This is one reason pigment can return even after an initially successful treatment. For melasma, visible light can also be important, not just UV.
* Hormonal influences can maintain it.

Melasma in particular is influenced by hormonal factors, which means treating the pigment without addressing ongoing triggers can result in recurrence.

* The skin has a “memory.”
Once melanocytes have been repeatedly stimulated, they can remain prone to overproduction of melanin.

WHAT IS YOUR SKIN BARRIER ?

It is the outermost layer of your skin, called the stratum corneum. Think of it like a brick wall:
• Skin cells are the bricks.
• Natural lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids) are the mortar holding the bricks together.

Its job is to keep the good things in (water and moisture) and the bad things out (bacteria, allergens, pollutants, and irritants).

Why is your skin barrier so important?

A healthy skin barrier:
• Locks in hydration, keeping your skin soft, plump, and comfortable.
• Protects against infection by preventing harmful microorganisms from entering.
• Reduces sensitivity by shielding nerve endings from irritants.
• Supports healing after injury or treatments.
• Maintains healthy skin function, helping your skin regulate moisture and defend itself every day.

What happens when your skin barrier is damaged?

When the barrier is compromised, your skin loses water more quickly and becomes more vulnerable to irritation. You may notice:
• Dryness and flaking
• Tightness
• Redness
• Stinging or burning when applying skincare
• Increased sensitivity
• Breakouts or inflammation
• Slower recovery after aesthetic treatments

Common causes include:
• Over-exfoliating (using too many acids or scrubs)
• Excessive use of retinoids without gradually introducing them
• Harsh cleansers
• Very hot showers
• Sun exposure without sunscreen
• Cold, dry weather
• Frequent cosmetic treatments without adequate recovery time

How can you repair and protect your skin barrier?

Focus on simple, supportive skincare:
1. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
2. Apply a moisturiser containing ceramides, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid.
3. Protect your skin daily with a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen.
4. Reduce exfoliation until your skin feels comfortable again.
5. Introduce active ingredients like retinoids or acids gradually.
6. Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet rich in healthy fats.

Seasonal change and your skin

Autumn (Fall)
Common skin effects
Transition dryness
Early barrier disruption
Uneven hydration

??!Why it happens??!

The skin is adjusting from humid conditions into cooler, drier weather, often leading to temporary imbalance.

Common presentations

Tightness
Mild flaking
Sensitivity during treatment recovery
How Seasonal Changes Affect Skin Physiology
Skin Barrier Function
The outer skin barrier (stratum corneum) relies on water, lipids, and natural moisturizing factors to remain intact. Seasonal extremes disrupt this balance.

Sebum Production

Heat → increased oil production
Cold → reduced oil production

Inflammation
UV radiation, pollution, allergens, and dry air can activate inflammatory mediators, increasing:
Redness
Sensitivity
Acne
Rosacea flare-ups
Collagen and Ageing
Chronic UV exposure contributes to:
Collagen degradation
Elastin damage
Fine lines
Pigmentation

1. Gentle Cleanser

Switch from foaming or stripping cleansers to a hydrating cleanser.

Look for:
• Ceramides
• Glycerin
• Hyaluronic acid
• Cream or milk cleansers

2. Hydrating Serum

Winter skin benefits from humectants that draw water into the skin.

Best ingredients:
• Hyaluronic acid
• Polyglutamic acid
• Panthenol (B5)
• Niacinamide

3. Richer Moisturiser

In winter, many people need a thicker cream rather than a lightweight lotion.

Look for:
• Ceramides
• Squalane
• Shea butter
• Cholesterol
• Fatty acids
ADD A PUMP OF DERMAHEAL BALM

4. Facial Oil (Optional)

Helpful for very dry or mature skin.

Good oils:
• Squalane
• Jojoba oil

5. SPF — Still Essential

UV exposure still contributes to pigmentation, collagen breakdown, and ageing during winter.

Use:
• SPF 30–50 daily
• Especially important if using retinoids or exfoliants

6. Lip and Barrier Repair Products

Winter commonly affects lips, nose, and around the eyes.

Best ingredients:

• Lanolin
• Petrolatum
• Ceramides
DERMAHEAL LIP BALM
