A bit of light painting with JASMIN YOUNG. For anyone curious how it’s done: camera on a tripod, flash in one hand, a large clear tube with a torch inside in the other. I hit the shutter, run behind her, spin the tube, run out of frame, then fire the strobe at Jasmin. All before the shutter closes. Keep in mind it’s also pitch black and neither of us can see a thing while all of this is happening, lol.

JASMIN YOUNG

JASMIN YOUNG had barely been in front of a camera when I found her. Almost nobody I approach has. That’s my favourite place to start.

You get to watch someone go from having no real idea what they’re capable of, to letting go of the internal dialogue that often gets in the way. That’s what I’m in it for. The pictures are just the evidence.

Nearly everyone turns up nervous. I don’t give them time to settle into it though. I direct fast so the self-consciousness never gets a hold, because I’ve already moved us somewhere else. Most people end up distracted by how inspired I am, how much I love doing this. How fun I make it. That’s the whole trick. It lands later, on the drive home, when those I photograph think back and realise the nerves they’d braced for never had a chance.

Saying I enjoyed working with Jasmin would be an understatement. She’s behind some of my favourite work. We hardly ever planned. We’d head out for half a day and come home with a stack of great frames. The way Jas modelled always made me feel like a much better photographer. We spent years working out what we made best together, and that’s why nobody will ever love these images the way I do. I remember all of it. Every long drive, every moment, every year that turned into these frames, and I’m super grateful for them.
