βοΈThe outermost layer of the epidermis of the skin is the Stratum Corneum. It is an intricately designed physical & chemical barrier to the outside world.
π
π»ββοΈSometimes this outer layer can feel & look less than ok... but removing it (via resurfacing peels, micro/hydro dermabrasion & granular exfoliants) is NEVER the answer!ββββββββ
This layer should always be encouraged, nourished & protected - not destroyed.ββββββββ
π₯To encourage optimal function of ALL of the various layers & functions of the skin, we must deliver Vitamin A, Antioxidants, EFAβs & peptides into the skin ββββββββ
ππ§The Basal cells need good supply of Essential Fatty Acids & Water - they are essential for keeping the skin hydrated & also for creating the chemical part of the skins barrier.ββββββββ
π§¬When the skin cells reach the end of their life cycle at the surface of the skin, the water & Essential Fatty Acids they possess break down & leak out creating our acid mantle (chemical barrier)ββββββββ
π¦ If the cells donβt contain these ingredients (if the Basal cells didnβt have any to pass on), our acid mantle will be unbalanced, leaving us more open to pathogens & pollutants which cause inflammation & infection.ββββββββ
π¬A poor barrier will also mean any water our skin does contain will evaporate out easily. ββββββββ
π¦A skin that lacks water & EFAβs may also feel rough & have a dull appearance.ββββββββ
π©ΉIf you strip this outer barrier away or compromise it in the name of trying to achieve a smoother skin - you can actually compound the problem! A βquick fixβ approach likely to cause long term problemsβ¦ββββββββ
So, you can see how important it is to ensure our Basal cells are kept nourished & why there is no place for harsh exfoliation when trying to create a healthier skin π

WHERE IT ALL STARTSβ β β β β β β β β ββββββββ
π§±Our epidermis is made up of a whooooole bunch of these guys, all sitting tightly packed together like bricks, forming the strong physical barrier that protects our insides from the outside.ββββββββ
π€°π»In the basement of the epidermis we have a layer of Basal skin cells. They are put there when we are being put together in our mothers womb & stay there creating brand new skin cells constantly through our whole life.ββββββββ
The Basal cell creates a copy of itself over & over & naturally those new cells get pushed up until they reach the surface of our skin & shed off to become house dust.ββββββββ
So, as you can imagine, the health of these Basal cells has a lot to do with how your skin looks on the surface.ββββββββ
A Basal cell can only create a new cell with what it has available. If it is a dehydrated & malnourished sultana-like cell - thatβs exactly what its duplicate cells will look & behave like. Pretty bloody poorly.ββββββββ
πSo, what do our Basal cells need to create the most healthy new cells possible?ββββββββ
β’ π§Water for healthy cytoplasmββββββββ
β’ πOmega 3 for a healthy cell membraneββββββββ
β’ π₯Vitamin A for a healthy nucleus (brain of the cell)β β β β β β β β β ββββββββ
The water & EFAβs that make up the cell cytoplasm & membrane contribute significantly to our Acid Mantle which is our chemical barrier that lays like mortar between the skin cells in the very upper layer of the Epidermis.ββββββββ
Of course there are many other factors that may influence the health and appearance of the skin, but if you can get the ESSENTIAL ingredients mentioned above to the cells, the skin will be armed to do exactly what it is there to doβ¦ & GLOW while it does it!β β β β β β β β β ββββββββ

A little change to the studio schedule πΏ
Iβve had a few lovely clients tell me theyβd love to come in, but Thursdays and Fridays just donβt work around their work commitments.
So I thought Iβd listen! π€
From 26 October, Iβll be opening the studio every second Monday through until Christmas, as a little trial to see whether Monday appointments make it easier for more of you to find time for your skin (and yourself).
If Mondays have been the day youβve been wishing I was open, this is for you!
Appointments are available by message, as usual.
And if Thursdays and Fridays are your preferred days, nothing is changing there β theyβll remain my regular studio days.
Letβs see how this little experiment goesβ¦ πΏ

With an average thickness of a sheet of paper, the Epidermal layer of your skin is your first physical line of defence against the outside worldββββββββ
π§±Skin cells are like bricks, overlapping & creating a physical barrier. The Epidermis can be broken down into several layers, including the Basal layer at the deepest level of the Epidermis, and the Stratum Corneum which is the outermost layer that we see when we look in the mirror.
πAt the base of the Epidermis we have our Basal cells which actually took up residence there when we were being created in our motherβs womb. For our whole life, these Basal cells in the basement of the Epidermis are constantly creating brand new skin cells & pushing these new cells upward through the layers of the Epidermis until they eventually shed off & become house dustββββββββ
β¨This constant turnover of cells means we have endless opportunities to create a healthier skinβ¨ββββββββ
As these new cells move up through the epidermis towards the outside world, their role in protecting us changes, as does their structureββββββββ.
π‘Every phase of this cell life cycle is key to creating a healthy skin on the surface (what we see when we look in the mirror) & keeping our body safe from the outside worldββββββββ
π€Basal cells can only create copies of themselves. If theyβre in poor health, every cell they produce will also be unhealthy & not able to fulfil its role is creating a healthy barrier at the end of their life cycleβ β β β β β β β β ββββββββ
π§So how do we ensure our Mother cells are as healthy as can be? Like every cell in our body, they need to be fed with nutrients, oxygen, water & Essential Fatty Acids!ββββββββ
π₯All of these vital ingredients are delivered to the Basal cells by a network of blood vessels found just below the Epidermis, in the Dermisββββββββ
π₯These vital nutrients get into our bloodstream from what we consume & digestββββββββ
π§π»ββοΈWe can also deliver some of these key ingredients topically - by applying them to the surface of the skin where they are absorbed into the skin cells more directly

β β β β β β β β β ββββββββ
π‘ It is a massive organ and is one of our first and most important lines of defence against the outside world, along with our gut and our lungs. β β β β β β β β β ββββββββ

It is so strong and resilient and has the most amazing mechanisms to protect us. β β β β β β β β β ββββββββ

𧬠My passion as a skin focused Beauty Therapist is to ensure that your skin is functioning at its best. Well, this is a little bit specialβ¦ π€
Last week I shared the news that I have been named a finalist in the Sole Trader Excellence category of the 2026 West Australian Skin, Spa, Aesthetics & Beauty Awards (WASSABA) alongside some incredibly talented therapists from across WA.
This is the first time I have put my name forward in an awards competition open to the whole industry, so to be a finalist is truly so rewarding.
The application process was quite extensive and it really had me stretching a part of my brain in a way that was very new to me! π And I have to admit, seeing everything Iβve worked towards over the past 20+ years written down on paper was a pretty special experience in itself.
But perhaps what makes this recognition feel even more meaningful is where I am now.
After more than 20 years working in the skin industry, I made the big decision to leave Geraldton, move to Bridgetown and start building my business again in a community where I was essentially starting from scratch.
No established client base.
No local reputation.
Just a little studio, a lot of experience, and a whole lot of hope. π€
So to have Beauty on Silvery Wave recognised at a WA industry level, while Iβm in the process of building this new chapter, is something I am incredibly proud of.
I donβt know what the outcome will be, but honestly, being named a finalist is an achievement I am very happy to celebrate. π₯Ή
And to my beautiful clients, both new and those who have supported me from afar as I made this transition β thank you. Your support, encouragement and trust mean more than you know.
Thank you to WA Skin, Spa, Aesthetics & Beauty Awards for creating this incredible opportunity to celebrate and recognise the amazing talent within our West Australian industry. ππ»β¨
Feeling very grateful, very proudβ¦ and a little bit excited to see what happens next. π€
